Tractor is a Deere 440I. ATF is what is supposed to be in the Direction reverser case, but when I just drained it it looked more like chocolate milk. This led me to check the trans oil which is supposed to be 80 or 90 weight. This looked like vanilla ice cream that was left in a bowl to melt. Sorry but that is really what it looked like, But it was much thicker! Does this sound like moisture in these oils? I am most worried about the trans. at this point. Maybe somebody can shed some light on this for me?

The rubber boot around the gear shifter is likely rotton from age and is now funneling water in instead of sheding it. Those transmissions with copper alloy bushings should not have GL-5 gear lube used. When exposed to moisture the sulphur based additives turn into a mild acid. GL-4 Marine is very good as it's designed to still protect in marine drives with leaking water seals. Pull the round three bolt cover located just above the pto on the back cover. With a powerful light carefully examine every gear tooth of both the r & P. Bad things can happen if abused.

I did collect a good sample as it was draining. I didnt see any metal. I have refilled with 80-90W and intend to run it today, redrain, and refill. As always I appreciate all of your help. The people on this site are the best!

Add seafoam to your oil when you flush your system. It will help clean and remove the moisture. I used on a tractor about a year ago. It really worked well. Hope this helps.

flush it out. water got in somehow. flush it with only what is supposed to be in there,,,,nothing else. then refill with proper fluid, but first find where the water got in and fix that.

Its water. Drain it all out and let it drip as long as you can.Flush it out with some kerosene until the kero comes out clean. Then flush that out with the proper oil before refilling everything.
You can use the lighter grade of John Deere HyGard in place of the ATF. The only difference is the HyGard will not have the red dye in it the ATF has. Check the oil after a few hours use.You may have to repeat the process a time or two. Covering the tractor with a cheap plastic tarp will keep this from happening again.

Thanks guys. I was pretty sure on the ATF but the trans oil was so thick that it probably took about 30 min to drain the 2 gal. I was worried that the previous owner was covering something up with some kind of trick.

I just ran into the same problem with a cub. I was going to do some work on a previous welded shifter and removed the cover to find the thick gooy gear oil water and axle grease. Upon digging the axle grease out i found some metal peices which turned out to ge a countershaft bearing cage. Might want to see if there are any metal peices in that stuff.
