Somewhat ot but I need a quick response turn around and this seems to be the most active forum. I'm looking to buy a new Swisher ZTR 60" mower with a 25 hp B/S engine. The mower looks like it is well built and 1/2 the price of the major brands. It is now discounted for winter sell and is in the $3500 range. They have one left. Does anyone out there have any input on a Swisher ZTR? Thanks.

Check and see what kind of drive it has. If it has pumps and wheel motor, then it will not be a bad unit for the money. If it has a hydro transaxle, It is a low end unit and the longevity is going to be questionable. Swisher is not a bad name, but I have had a couple of theri Zs in to work on, and they are a pretty light built machine compared to the companies that built the better ones. This falls into the area of "you get what you pay for" if it is cheaper than the others, there has to be a reason, the price of labor and steel is still there, so something has be shorted to make it that cheap. They are not even cloase to the quality of the Swisher ride king that this company made for so many years, now that was one tough little brute!!

You get what you pay for. I bought a New Kubota ZD21 about 2 years ago and it has been one of the best things I've ever owned. 21 hp Kubota water cooled diesel engine, that is bolted right up to a Kubota transmission, 60" welded deck, hydraulic lift deck, walking front axle that has a built in jacking system that stands the mower up on its back tires so you can change blades easily, has as good of a seat as my big tractors. I paid almost $9,000 for mine, but I'd say I'll still be runnin er in 20 years when those air cooled gas jobs will be winded and on a slow boat to china.

They look pretty good. I have seen them at TSC. It will do the same basic job as a commercial job like a toro, just not as long and maybe with a few more fixes in between. Then again, they are also $3000 dollars cheaper. You can afford a few bearings now and then if that is the case. I say go for it.

A B&S motor for a machine like that should be there top of the line - Vangard model I believe. If not, I would think twice paying that much for a machine with an I/C model or lower grade model.

Don't know anything about Swisher, but when I was looking for a ZTR I decided certain things were the mark of a quality mower:

A heavy made cutter deck of thick steel, welded up and not stamped out(except for John Deere which has a very thick stamped deck.

A floorboard that is hinged and can be swung up for easy access to the belts.

A comfortable seat. I was impressed with the seat on the Cub Cadet Tank and the one I bought, a Dixie Chopper.

An industrial rated engine.

If you get a ZTR, be advised that they make a lot of noise and you will need hearing protection. They throw dust and grass clippings out so I needed dust masks.

Hope this helps. Maybe someone with experience on a Swisher will post.
