How do we adjust the plow on this type of tractor to get depth? The plow does not go down into the ground and we cant seem to get the plow to lower any further.

I tried to use a homemade bottom on a 100 "bout 10 years ago and all I could do wuz git it to slide across the top of the ground. After I exhausted myself mess"in wif it so never tried it again, still have the plow so one day may take a nutter try wif it. I had a nice IHC 2 bottom made fer it but cuzz my 100 or 140 never have to do enny hard werk I sold it. I am sure a 140 will git’er"done done if set up rite. I do have a arsenal of tractors that are plow"in fools so use them to break land.
I am not sure if the info on my web site applies to a 140 but would think it would have the same basics, click on Hobos and enter the barn door fer sum plow"in tips, hope this helps.

Hi Jim,
I emailed you today just thought I would send you a note this way too. Would love to talk to you about getting together so you could take a look at the tractor. Drop us an email if you are open to this.
Thanks,

I had a 140 tractor with a single, mounted plow and a one-point fast hitch. Although I didn't use the plow, it seems that I recall that the draft on the plow was controlled by the front hydraulics (the front of the plow is attached to the front hydraulic arms). If you don't have the angle of the plow set correctly as suggested by Hugh McKay, you're not gonna succeed. To "level" the plow I think you'll have to adjust the front hydraulic lever to make the plow sit level, then leave it and use the rear hydraulics to raise and lower the plow. Make certain you have the plow set up correctly before you go to the field. Tim

It really doesn't matter whether you a talking 140 plow or 140 tractor with it's plow. the biggest single cause of plows not penetrating soil is worn out plow points and shares. Set your plow level on a floor, if the points look like sled runners, that is exactly how they will act, and they will ride any plow right out of the soil. As Allan said the points have to suck that plow down.

Like Allan, I am a bit curious whether that plow is the #140 plow or the 140 tractor with plow?

It is a 140 tractor with a plow. The friend who is helping us said that the blades are not laying right and so cannot "suck". But we cant figure out how to change it?

Susan: This is a 140 tractor with fast hitch, I presume. Is this a one or two bottom plow? Do you have any photos you could post or e mail to me? Does your tractor have the linkage from front of hitch, up to right rockshaft beside fuel tank? That linkage does control plow depth, and is controlled by hydraulic lever closest to the throttle. If that linkage has been removed and front of hitch pinned to bottom of platform, you will never get that plow in ground, even if you weld 6" to plow points.

If you are in question of what I'm talking about send me an e mail. I think I have some photos scanned showing how this works. Tell me or show me a bit more about your plow, ie the questions I asked. We'll have you plowing in no time.

Could you send us a picture of where the pin is and what it looks like. We think it is pinned to the platform? We could use a picture to see what it should look like. Unfortunately we have not been able to find a manual for this tractor and we are sort of in a hurry to get this garden turned as we would like to plant in March.

Thank you.

Are you talking about a 140 plow or a 140 tractor?

If the IH 140 plow:

Depth is controlled by the guage wheel on the side. Change the bolt to a different hole to change the depth.

Now, this means of course that you are dealing with a decent set of shares having plenty of suck and not working in rock hard soil.

There is not guage wheel on the plow it is a 140 tractor. It appears the depth control should be on the tractor but we have never used this type before. This belongs to some folks who asked us to turn over a garden area for them and this is the type of tractor they have. The disc would also not go down very deep when we tried that?

Thanks for any help you might be able to give.
