While investigating a noise on a new to me car (98 VW Golf (gas)) I found a crack in the exhaust manifold. It looks like someone's made a poor attempt to repair it previously and failed. Any suggestions on what this manifold is made of and how best I could repair it? Many thanks, tractorsam

Sam,

It is quite repairable if you stay away from anything that has to do with arc weld or epoxy. Epoxy will not stand up to the heat and arc weld contracts so much that it will crack before it is cool, also the thermal cycling will continually add to that problem. You need it on the bench ,a large torch to heat it to a red glow, a smaller torch with
which to weld , some bare cast iron rod , and
a can of cast iron welding flux.

Manifold in the picture and the link was repaired with torch and cast iron rod.

I would give some JB weld a try first just to see what happens. Its worth a shot, and lots cheaper than a new manifold....

Muffler shops deal with this all day. Find sombody who has been doing them awhile and they will know which ones hold and which ones don't.
