Here in Western , Pa. JD -D tractors seem to be few and far in between. Weren't they popular here or weren't there that many made?

Here in the east dairy farming was predominate. Dairymen need to grow corn which needed cultivation before herbicides were developed. The D is not suitable for that purpose and John Deere's tractors aimed at that market were first the GP then the A, B and G which had adjustable wheel spaceing and attach points for cultivating corn and other row crops.

Years ago, the Ds in E. central Wi were few and far between but, in the last few years I have been seeing many of them. I bought an early 27 on steel 42 years ago when I was in fifth grade. Still own it and will probably die with it. I know that many of them were brought in from out west and from Canada. Many sell on ebay.

The JD D was made from 1924-53 in unstyled and later styled versions so a lot of them were made. It was mostly a wheatland or flatland farming tractor so that may be why it's not common in your area. Was the largest in JD line then till the R diesel came out in 1949 or so. johnnypopper.com see the left column of models info.

John Deere made the D from 1923 to 1953 The D was more populear in wheat country because the D is a standard type tractor.
