The old timers used Red Oak bark in water to make tannic acid.In some areas of early American Red Oak almost becane extinct for this reason.

Hey Old, Check a local fur buyer in your area. Sometimes they will trade raw hides for items such as gloves. Or he could point you in the right direction. DitchWI

Old,

From your posts, I'm guessing that you are about the same age as I am (late '60s). Don't you remember how some of your teachers used to tan hides?

Just out of curiosity, are you located anywhere near Fort Lost-in-the Woods, Misery?

Not as old as you may think. I haven't made it to my 60s yet and just last year made it to 50 which in a week or so will be 51. I learned most of what I know by keeping my month shut and listening to the older people around me. And yep I'm about 35-40 miles form the fort lost in the woods. The fort is just a little south east of me

Sorry about the mis-judgement on the age!!!!

I spent 6 wonderful months of my life at Leonard Wood in 1960. Hottest place in the world in July and coldest place in December. Those coal-fired furnaces didn't do a real good job when our "volunteer" fireman went to sleep in the middle of the night.

Waynesville was fun after I got liberty to get off post every night.

I don't have instructions or the knowhow to do it but I do know that it is alot of work.
There are two ways that it can be done, the way the indians did it, and the way they do it today.
The indian method used the animals brains, (yes brains) a long period of time soaking in some kind of brine and hours of scraping the flesh off.
the modern method is still alot of work but uses some nasty chemical, (chromium I think).
In my teen years my buddy and I thought we were Grizzly Adams. and sent away for Taxidermy Kit. We were going to tan hides and stuff squirrels.
My buddy got into it, but I never did. I couldn't get over the smell.
Ya otter post this one on Kountry life.
There has to be instructions on the web somewhere.

Tandy used to have a whole kit, chemicals, directions, etc. That"s the way we did it. Rit clothes dies work well for coloring the leather, otherwise it will end up an ugly gray. Die it just as you would cloth. As the other poster says it is a lot of work - especially removing all the flesh from the hide, as well as all the hair. Also be aware that there is not near as much usable leather in a hide as it appears there would be.
