Need a little advice here...
Went home to the old farm last weekend. Went down to Dad's shop just to look around and make sure everything was ok.
When I walked up to the side door I saw liguid ozing across the concrete.
Seems someone had broken a window out of the overhead door and proceeded to shoot a bunck of plastic jugs where dad stored hydraulic and motor oil with a pellet gun.
Well, I went to tractor supply and got enough oil dry to clean up the mess, but was wondering about the remainder of the oil and hydraulic fluid.
Some of the jugs are still over half full. Can I put the remaining oil in containers and use it? Or should I just get rid of the whole mess?
There is a lot of oil in those containers. Dad bought everything by the case so I really hate to get rid of it all.
Any advice is always welcome.

Golf tees should work if the holes are from pellet guns.

I assume they leaked down to the holes.

I would cover the hole with duct tape and save it for later use.

But try to get it used up fairly soon.

If duct tape won’t stick because of the oil, check with your hardware or auto supply store for rubber or plastic plugs. When we remove something like a light from a roof we press them into the holes and they expand on the other side. Pretty much flush on the roof side but you can press them through the pellet hole. I'd say oil should be fine but good call on straining for the pellet when you do use it. Might want to lower the buckets out of sight. Whoever did it thought it was funny and will probably try it again.

One other thought.

Strain for pellets when you use it.

Yeah Gary...it just ran out to the level of the hole.
I was thinking about pouring it thru cheese cloth into clean containers. I am worried about moisture getting in it. I have old iron...but no use in messing it up by putting water in the things.

Hi Bill,

How about getting a used 35gal oil drum from the local supplier. It won't hurt to mix what little oil would be left over in the drum.

Hi T-Bone
Well...he had a little of everything in there. IH hyd trans fluid, JD hyd fluid, engine oil...you name it. I lost about half of it to who ever did the dirty work.
I can get clean gallon jugs real easy. I just need to know about peoples thoughts on moisture. I have no idea how long they have been open.

If you set the jugs on cold concrete the water should migrate to the bottom and if cold enough freeze. Then strain the top oil into a second jug. That is how I take water out of waste oil people bring me to burn. Come spring I combine all the leftover water oil mix and send it to the dump for proper disposal.

Remember what they say about oil and water, they don't mix. You might want to try to get a clear container that you can see through, like a juice bottle or glass gallon jug and pour whats left of one oil container into it. Let it sit for a while and come back and check on it. If there is water or debris in the oil you should be able to see it at the bottom. Then you would know where you stand with what oil you have left. If the oil ends up being clean, pour it into a new container, label it, and put away for use later.

Hi Bill,

I drained some choclate milk Hy-tran out into 5gal buckets and covered for a year with trash bags.

After a year the Hy-tran was very clear at the top, looked new. Down at the bottom maybe 1-1/2gals was a throw away as it had too much water and trash in it. I filtered it and used it to top off with. I didn"t see a problem with it.

I'd say the oil is still good, and it would be safe to use.
