We recently got a older Ford 6000 Commander Diesel in the shop from auction. No one wanted it, yes it has a Select-o-speed in it. Some of the gears were out, my first thought was the torque limiting clutch. After all the tests, and digging through the old shop manuals, i procedded to do the band adjustment. On band 1 the adjustment screw would not bottom out! After some deep thought and wonder, i got to the top inspection cover. When i opened it up i found band 1 completly disassembled and floating around like a dead cod, seal surface was very good, and found the shunt in the bottom of the trans. Makes one wonder why that happened. She is a neat unit and will be going into paint tommorrow. Remember when always in doubt....Disassemble it. DTURKE

I was looking at a 6000 SOS (help!) about 25 years ago- The seller was looking on as I played with the transmission, lurching a bit, etc.- He had kind of a troubled look on his face. He finally asked me if I had any little kids- I told him I did. He said, "You know, I don't think I want to sell you that tractor- that transmission kind of has a mind of its own, and can be a little erratic- the last thing I want on my conscience is that tractor running over your boy." I appreciated his candor, and kept looking.

I'm not that lucky either...I'd die and they'd bury someone else..... Over the years , I've found that working on SOS transmissions are a lot like trying to put socks on a rooster..They put a lot of junk into that little case...

I'm never that lucky.

When I would have opened it up the bottom would have been full of gear teeth.

Your gonna paint it red aren't you?LOL

Those Ford 6000s are one of the oddest looking tractors I think I have ever seen, and I still like them. One of these days when I win the lottery, I might have to find one.

I can point you to a guy who runs somwhere around 15-20 on his farm, and has another 10-15 parts tractors laying around. I'm sure he wouldn't miss just one....

I know were there are about 4 or 5 of them sitting out in a field rotting away if you are interested. From what I remember they are mostly whole just the SOS is out of them or they might just need a adjustment. ;-)
