A few posts ago the discussion was on the engines for these units. I had the bright idea that the complete unit could be used to cool a shop in the summer. Is this fesible or would fuel cost make it prohibitive? Thanks in advance for your opinion and ideas.

Hi jc,

Without running alot of hard numbers, can it be used ? Yes

Will it be cost effective? Nope and won't even come close to a generator running a AC unit in most cases. Home made biodiesel might come close to fuel cost of a generator/AC but would depend on how many parts you need to buy to make the TK workable for AC use.

Do you have well/stream water avialable? A small circulating pump thru a AC coil along with a forced air fan will produce AC like air for a cheap cost, that is as cheap as AC costs.

Another is freeze blocks of ice at another location to add to a chilled water tank, then use the above to achieve cooling. A Ice water bath is a constant 32ºF.

I suppose it would work ok, but those things are terribly noisy. Just my opinion. I repair them for a living.

Aloha, First you would have to know the specs of the unit before anything can be done. Yes, it could be done if it were in specs of the unit.

It would work fine,I have seen one used to cool an office with the diesel replaced with an electric motor. If running big amp power for an electric motor to the shop would be a problem, then it would run quite cheap on off road dieselfuel. Many reefers are made to work as a cooler or heat pump at the flick of a switch. They would keep the cargo cold when above freezing,or reverse as a heat pump to keep it from freezing in very cold weather. With the right thermostat it would maintain any temp you desired.

Many years ago here in Minneapolis, home of Thermo-King, a unit was being used to cool a large office building. After a long weekend people returned to work and found that ink had frozen, broken the glass jars and made quite a mess.

Don't think it would work well for that since its either a freezer unit or a unit made to cool things down to around 35-40 degress so if you used it to cool a shop it wouldn't be working as if should and would either cool to much or burn its self out doing the job.

Don't know about fuel costs but I saw where a guy used one to cool a small building where they hung and stored their deer meat.
