Hi Buddy;
As one of Dowdeswell's bunch I have some insight into ploughing in England. Yes Kv does make some good ploughs, but the Dowdeswell match ploughs are very special - as you saw in the last World Match.
Its really down to the skills of the ploughman at the end of the day.
Have used Ransomes TS54 myself, nice little plough, but it was not designed as a match plough.
Tried several makes & models over the years.
The "best" comercially built plough here which is ideal for matchwork has to be the International B-12. I used a 2 furrow at 12". Then converted a 3 furrow into 2, and mixed the legs to give me a 2 furrow 13" plough. This enabled me to have an extra inch to play with in the open furrow to take out any curves or kinks - very neccessary in my case ! LoL. Used it behind B-275 which has the extra gears, diff lock & weight to make it an "ideal" tractor for match ploughing.
Have a great Xmas down there.
Cheers David

As an ex-pat of England I was realy pleased to see the results of the last world ploughing ploughing match, but as I work for the importers of Overum in NZ I kept my exitement quiet! The "proper" Ransome match plough was the TS86 I think, but Imported ploughs were kept at a minimum here due to import restrictions that used to be in force, Ferguson, D.B., & I.H. ploughs were actually made here in Christchurch for the NZ market, I have seen a 4 furrow trailing plough of NZ make but with Ransome YL183s on it. I have used an IH plough found it great in stubble, but the ACE bodies not so at home in grass. I plough in the plain class here which is as close to the UK classic class as you can get, but was told in no uncertain terms that the skims and tail pieces had to go and then was nearly disquailified for using the tilt on my coulters! Driving back from a job last week in shorts and a tee shirt with the air con on at full belt and hearing Christmas songs on the radio! not got my head round that one just yet. There are a few Dowdswells over here but not many, but bear in mind we are only just seeing skimmers and reversable ploughs just begining to get accepted on the market. Have a good Christmas,and keep those pictures of "proper" ploughing coming.

Compitition ploughing rules are governed by the world ploughing organisation so when it comes to the annual world match everybody is doing the same thing, but you will find local variations as I did when I emigrated to New Zealand from England. The W.P.O. have a web site. Link The rules and links to national ploughing sites are there.

 kverneland ploughs . . .? in reply to richard in nz, 12-23-2006 14:22:48
Richard: The Kverneland plow/plough is hardly used over in the U.S., but it thoroughly dominates other brands, according to the winners list, at the international competition.
What are we missing? Do you have experience with the brand? What are its advantages? Should the U.S. annex Norway?

Kvernland have put a lot of money in to match ploughing, and it sells them a lot of ploughs. They make a good comercial plough and they do a good job. Seems to me that ploughing, like everything else follows to a lesser or greater extent, fashion. In the '60s and '70s Ransomes ploughs took all the prizes, in the late 70s and early 80s it was the turn for Fiskars, now Kvernland, but a suprise this year when British Dowdeswells took the prizes. Kvernland make a good plough, but I don't think they are the last word, me? I carry on in the plain ploughing classes with a Ransomes TS54A built in the early 1960s, behind a 1963 Massey Ferguson 65 tractor, and I go for the enjoyment of it.

Depends on what class you want to plow in.I think there are 3 or 4 different types.Call Craig Warner at Mingo, Ia. 641-363-4204. He plows competively every year.
