I had to replace the outside nut but it spins before I can get it tight. How is this accomplished? Do I need to get inside to hold the other end? Thanks for your help

If it spins that way then you have other problems also. That pin has a taper fit to the rear end and should be tight and if it isn't then it will leak fluid and also can hurt the trumpet and even destory it over time. To fix that you have to pull off the trumpet and if it where me I would replace the pin and tighten it up as it should be.
