I was looking at a John Deere 4440 today that is going to auction next week. It has 7945 hrs on it. It started up great in the cold weather and sounded very strong. It has the quad range transmission. I did not see any blow-by or anything that would lead me to believe that there is a problem with the engine. The clutch and transmission seems very strong and responsive. The tires are in good shape also. I did find a couple of problems. There is a panel missing from between the steering wheel and the cab. The engine cut off bracket is broke off inside the cab. It still works, but it needs fixed. The biggest problem I found was that the PTO lever will not stay engaged. Do you think this is a tractor worth getting for hay work and light tillage? If so, what do you think the max price should be on this tractor.

Thank you for your input.

It is worth what you are willing to pay for it. What they are worth and what it may take to buy one could be quite different. They have a good reputation, but all things considered there are probably other colors equal in work output and reliabilitiy for less money. The dealer in your area should make a difference to you what they are worth also. If the paint color is important to you, your bank account and or your banker can help make the decision.

My friend bought a 4440 similiar to one you described also had cracked dash at kill cable for $18000 not long ago. PTO not staying engaged can be repaired relatively easy by removing pto control valve on outside LH clutch housing and replace a bent arm inside it.Tx Jim

If you engaged the PTO at slow idle it will usually will not stay engaged.Try it again at half throttle. It will probably take a new dash to repair the engine kill button, but that is not a big problem to replace.Should cost a bit over $100.You might be able to repair it with some big washers.I'll bet the missing panel is around somewhere. No reason for it not to be.Someone has probably been working on the circuit breakers.$20,000 to $22,000 would be my top bid.It would be a wonderful tractor for what you need it for. The 4440 and the old venerable 4020 are my two all time favorite tractors.

I saw a rough one with 6,000 hours go for $15,000 the other weekend at an auction. They seem to bring the $$$.
