My son is on the local fire dept. and his pager went off this afternoon with a report of a tractor fire at a location just a couple of miles from here. He went flying over there and found the neighbor's 1850 Diesel sitting by the hog building with flames on the ground underneath it and some flames in the hood area. My son put it out quickly so nothing was burned bad but laying on the ground underneath the engine was part of a camshaft and a couple of pistons and he could see through a hole in the block. Seems it was sitting there running a PTO powered pressure washer and the engine gave up the ghost and shucked it's guts. This is a real nice, good looking 1850 that grinds feed and does other chores on a regular basis. This stuff happens but I was surprised there was a fire when it was just sitting there running under no load. Maybe it overheated?Jim

If a bearing went out the heated journal and inserts can be thousands of degrees. Enough to melt the metal and weld pieces together. If it has been useful, maybe a transplant would be a good idea. JimN
