I have a small tractor, around 5,000 pounds, that I need hauled 300 miles. What should I expect to pay? What is fair? The tractor runs and I can help load it.

It is true that you can sometimes find someone going your way empty and they will give you a good rate - its better than nothing for them. I recently paid $450 to have a tractor moved 550 miles. I used the "Uship.com" site to get bids for this. It worked out real well.

For what it's worth I get 1.15-1.25 mile for partials and 2.00 mile for full loads if there legal dimensions then up from there for OD work . I carry a million liability and half million cargo for insurance . And yes if theres room and they're not paying for exclusive use which I ask about I sure will put something more on and I'll bet even Ray would too if he was paying for the fuel. After all he's not pulling that 3 bottom plow with that stieger in the shed .

Probably $1.50-$2.00 per loaded mile.

I never use professional haulers, most whine about there overhead, charge you $1.50 or more per mile, then haul several on the same load at that price and make a killing.A friend of mine had a whole load shipped out of florida for $1.25
per mile last week.I had a tractor shipped from washington state to ohio for $400 cash last summer, the hauler was even insured. You just need to look around to find someone headed your way.

I'd say you were extremely lucky. I don't know exactly how many miles it is from Washington to Ohio, but $400 did not even pay for the fuel.

All I have to say to you is there is no such thing as a backhaul and peaple that do it that way are cutting their own throat. This trucker was oviously doing LTL freight and had several other shipments on also.

Rusty,WHY not that is a whole $.25 cents a mile,if you can't make money at that rate something is wrong??Just kidding, there is something here that isn't being told. When I was still buying for my Collection,I usally had someone else that needed a tractor moved and I got all my expenses paid(Fuel+Motel)which in his case would have came to Appox.$1500.00.2400x2 miles. For the first poster $1.50-$1.75 IF I didn't have to drive to get it(Either the tractor was close to me or he was close to me).

Massey333, What was I thinking? A whole whoppin .25 cents a mile. If my truck could get about 100 miles to the gallon I think it might just work!

I got into a discussion on this same subject awhile back. Did my best to explain to him that some people actually make a living by hauling stuff for others. He seemed to be under the impression that all those 18 wheelers were running up and down the roads just for the fun of it. He then proceeded to inform me that he would just go out and buy a truck and trailer and move his own tractors, and he wouldn't be needing a CDL and he wouldn't have any need to stop at the weigh stations. I told him to go right ahead. Never heard anymore. I imagine he recieved a rather expensive education.

Probably around $500, plus or minus. If you can share the ride with another tractor going to the same place, you can cut the cost in half, but you will probably need to wait until that other tractor needs to be moved. I do some local hauling, and $1.80 per mile will cover expenses and put a little in my pocket.

Thanks Darin
