Hi Paul,

Just about anything will work that will keep the moisture and oxygen away from the metal.

Cheapest way I've found is to just get a couple of cans of aluminum or flat black spray paint from your local hardware or tractor supply store.

If ya don't do anything does that thin layer of surface rust really hurt anything?

Peabo the simple answer is yes. A Plow works at it's best when it looks like Alan's, most people are only plowing a small amount and don't even get them cleaned good before they are done. To do the best job (Alike for a garden) they need to start out clean. Also that "thin" layer of rust quickly becomes a thick layer when the plow has sat for a year or two longer than you thought it was going to. Brian

A few years ago I bought a Case pull type plow at auction. It had sat outside for many years since it was last used, and appeared to be rusted beyond hope, but when I got it home I went at it with a wire cup brush on an angle grinder and almost immediately I was pretty well covered with grease splatters. What I thought was rust turned out to be dirty grease. Someone had taken the time to do it right after the last use, and those plow bottoms cleaned up very well. I sold the plow a few weeks later for a good profit.

Not if ya keep the plow busy. :>)

This old plow is worn out and needs a lot of new iron. I didn't even coat it this fall since I have to rebuild the darned thing before another season anyway.

Wanted to find a good Massey to take it's place, but they are kinda hard to find anymore, so looks like I get to turn 'bout a million bolts prior to this spring's work. :>(

I use grease and used motor oil and apply it with an old paint brush.
