I bought a blue tractor, it looks as if deep in the paint it might have said 801 select shift. (not sure) It is only a 4 speed. How can I find out what it is?

this tractor has a grill that lokks of the workmaster style. The numbers on the flat spot by the starter is 40201 then serial 23972. Could be 6?? or 8?? Is there any mechanical or physical ways to tell?

It could have started as a 871 or 881 selectro speed and when the transmission went bad someone put in a X40 or X41 transmission. Finding the model and serial numbers witl be on the transmission so it will be from the donor tractor. You could check casting dates and it the transmission is far different than the engine, rear end, or others it would likely confirm a swap.
I hope this helps you.

Sounds like you have a Ford 801. Go to the tractor photos and serial numbers located to the left side of this screen.
