Just purchased a 1951 Oliver 77 in mint condition. The only problem that there is that there is a slight miss i can hear at the exhaust. I used it for three hours and it ran like a top except for the miss. No smoke lots of power so I don't believe its a carb issue. The miss seems to go away when the engine is under a load. The owner said it needed diffrent plugs so I replaced the D16 Champions for 386 Autolites. Not a bit of diffrence. Cap rotor, spark plug wires and points all look visually fine. I am planning on changing all of that stuff to rule that out. So I am looking for some advice on what it would be. Could it be a bad valve, or worse:) Erik

I have a 1953 MM UB and 1952 Massey 44. Both exhibited the "slight miss in the exhaust problem" when I got them. Not enough to affect performance but an annoying miss sound in the muffler.

On both of my tractors it was ignition timing (I think both were set a little fast). I reset timing on both and the miss was gone.

the 51 77 we baught this sept. is doing the same thing. Everything he said held for ours. enough Power, not bad miss, had new plugs, wires cap and rotor.. cap was put on wrong we corrected that and didnt change anything.

we found the miss was in #5. we then did a compression check... ya it was not good.
we pulled the Valve cover and the valves were working so now we will pull the head... well not just yet we will do that sometime "later" LOL.

If it goes away under a load the carb could be set just a tad bit rich and its flooding it self some. Of course it could be the cap or rotor also. One of my 77s will just stop dead once in a while and its caused by the rotor going bad, just out of the blue. Put in a ew rotor and it runs fine for who knows how long

It has a good muffler on it. I'm quite sure that the manifold is not cracked either. This web site needs an audio link so people could listen and diagonose these type of problems. Oh well I'll get to the bottom of it, I hope. Erik

Check each cylinder first by removing each plug wire while the engine is running. Each cylinder that is firing causes the engine rpm to drop when the spark plug wire is removed.A dead cylinder will maintain the same rpm when the wire is removed. If a cylinder is not firing, change the wire and/or plug, cap etc.If that does not correct the problem, run a compression test on the bad cylinder. Low compression could indicate a burnt valve.Check the valve lash, height of cam lobes.

So is the engine really misfiring or are you hearing a pop or sputter from the exhaust?
Does it have a good muffler or a straight pipe?
I'm assuming the engine isn't missing if it "runs like a top".
An exhaust valve may be set too tight or a cracked manifold will cause a pop or sputter.
