Buzz Saw Blade Speed?

I am reviving our old buzz saw, staked down, belted to a 1946 JD "A". We ran it with a "36 B many years ago, but I cannot remember what kind of speed we ran it. It has a 26" blade, with a tilt table.

What RPMs should the blade be running?

I use my chainsaw to cut log-lengths, but my carpal tunnel makes running a chainsaw very painful, so the buzz saw will make working wood a bit more enjoyable.

And don"t worry about our safety; we have used it a lot, and that spinning blade demands respect and lively attention at all times!

30 inch blade should run at 1000 rpm.Running blades faster takes more power.

Saw blades should be run at about 10,000 Feet Per Minute.
For a 26 inch blade that approximately equals 1470 RPM.

26*3.14*RPM/12=10000
RPM = 1469.8677

I have a old catalog "The price gauge is the name of it. Not sure of it's year, but it's very old. It has a chart telling what speed saw blades should run at. 20 and 22 inch 1000 to 1200 rpm. 24 and 26 inch, 850 to 1100 rpm. 28 and 30 inch, 800 to 1000 rpm. I hope this will be of help to you.

Back more years than I care to remember Dad had his saw mounted on an 'H' John Deere. The 'H' had a 14" pulley running, I'm guessing, 600 RPM. The saw's pulley was about 6". My math says that equates to ~2275 fpm with a saw speed of ~1500 rpm. The saw was, I think, was about 26". At that speed it cut well and the tractor ran it well. It would cut anything up to blade capacity.
You'll have to do the math on the 'A'. I've forgotten pulley size and rpm.

Thanks. Did a test run today. With the JD at 975 RPM, saw was running about 1350 RPM. My book gives belt speed @ 975 as 3250 FPM. That is the maximum speed for the Deere.

saw mill blades much larger than buzz saw. six or seven hundred rpm would be correct for older saw mill blade.

The flat belt should be running about 2500fpm This is pulley rpm times circumference. This speed is going to be approximate. The driven pulley should be in the area of one to 1'-3" in circumference to increase the saw speed to about 2000-2500 rpm. Our farmalls used a 2:1 overdrive ratio on a 24" saw. Pulley speed was ~1200, saw ~2400 rpm. All saws are dangerous and some can throw carbide inserts. The above information is best I know from personal experience. I would ask that you inspect the blade for cracks and defects befor operating, then while using it stand clear of the blade's plane of operation until its security has been proven. JimN

Keep in mind that I don't know, but aren't your saw rpm's high? An F20 with a standard pulley turns something like 650rpm and 2600fpm, so if you doubled and went another one half you would be looking at 1625fpm? I am running a 30 inch Galloway saw with a 26 inch drive and a 6 1/2 driven, and too tired to do the math tonight, the engine is turning 185rpm. Seems like 6 inch is the minimum for flat belt drive?

Well, well another Galloway saw. I have one also. The engine runs 270. On the John Deere we also had one we ran with a B. A little over 1/2 throttle worked good. 28 inch or 30 inch blade. Main thing, keep em sharp and have the teeth set right. I would like to know more about the Galloway. J.

Yeah, Mine is 7 1/2hp round rod, all factory saw rig. MAN I wish I could post pics!! Don't really know how fast it should turn, probably 225-250? It gets a little obnoxious if I run it faster than 190 or so.

RFD had a sawmill story on today- run by steamer. Guy said he ran it 6-700rpm.

THat would be the RPM of the steamer. They have large diameter pulleys to allow overdrive with a substantial driven pulley diameter. Belt speed is likely to be in the 2000-2500fps range. JimN
