Hi,
I've got a JD 730 D that has sat for 1 month without running....can I check the antifreeze concentration without stirring up the antifreeze by haveing to start the tractor.
In other words, does the antifreeze and water separate over time? Really dont want to have to start the tractor again.

if the antifreze/water mix seperates then something is wrong with the antifreeze. they should NOT seperate at all under any conditions according to the mix. i have an old tractor that sits for several months without running it and the coolant mix is the same as when it was put in. i check mine with a antifreeze tester when the engine is cold, although it can be done when it is warmed up also.

Anti-freeze will not seperate from water. There is no need to start and run the engine.

Here's what I do in reply to David McDan, 12-10-2006 09:03:05
I don't worry about the antifreeze separating from the water. I drain some into a coke can and put it in my freezer with a thermometer and give it 24 hours and if it does not freeze then it is good if it does freeze then I check the thermometer and check temp amd go from there. HTH

Most freezers bottom out at around 0 F. I trust it doesn't go below zero where you're at?

Check your antifreeze tester. Most are accurate within a certain temp range. If the coolant is too cold ,you may need to let the sample warm to get an accurate reading.
