What do you use to keep the black of a steering wheel from rubbing off on to your hands? I use a D-17 AC around the farm and have to use gloves or my hands are a mess. Is there a sealer or something that I can use to keep this from happening?

Thanks for all of the interesting ideas. I didn't know that there was so many ways to clean up a steering wheel and help preserve it at the same time. Thanks once again.

New steering wheels are cheap. It took a cutting torch to get the old ones off my two tractors, though.

Spiral-wrap black plastic electrical tape around it, lasts for years.

Well, first of all, keep your hands clean, don"t get oil and grease on the wheel.

I just got in the habit, years ago when I was folling with horses of putting on driing gloves when I left the house. Take them off to eat and shake hands, other than that, thats about it. Amazing how many fewer busted nuckles I get.

Make a trough out of aluminum flashing and pour in tool dip. Rotate the wheel in it and it will coat it very well. Have done this and it works great.

It works pretty good if you brush it on too.

I painted the steering wheel on my 9n with polyurethane krylon or plasti-coat black paint ( I can't remember which one) about ten years ago and it still looks really nice. Only takes about two good coats and it will last for years and your hands will be clean. Later.

I use Armor All wipes. They come in those round tubes like baby wipes. Not the tire wipes, not the glass wipes, but the other one. Can't rember their name right now, but I think the color is purple. Tire one is yellow, glass one is blue, Yes, the old lady just found them... purple container, called armor all cleaning wipes. After the second wipe down, no more black hands. Stayes clean all year in my machines. Does NOT make the wheel slippery. Mike

Best/cheapest way I've found is to multiple CLEAR coat it with WalMart clear paint. Lasts about a year and does no harm to the original covering. .99/CHEAP!!. Ya don't even have to take it off or mask anything.

jim

ps....if your tractor has a fairly decent paint job whose only fault is some fading due to oxidation, CLEAR coat it instead of spending 2 weeks taking it down to a point where you can mask and color coat. Overspray is NO longer a problem. Little bit of overspray only serves to 'brighten-up' the color it touches. Just DON'T get it on rubber. NOT a good idea.
