there is truely nice people on this site. my first antique tractor arived from ne this afternoon,(38 A) and i'm on cloud 9. it was interesting at first, about took out my light pole. u really have to move the clutch lever hard, scared me a little. differnt than anything i have drove. i bought the tractor and found someone to haul it from the ads on this site. my back is also hurting, that's a odd way to start something. thanks everyone for a great site.

I had a hand start A many years ago, and an old guy stopped by when I was wearing myself out trying to "spin" the flywheel. He said, "These are old mens tractors- Make believe you are as old as I am, and you can just barely get the flywheel to the top, then nudge it over"- which he did, and away it went. I couldn't have scripted it any better.

Dan, where in SC are you. I am in Oconee County. I have a 39 A and it is very easy to crank. I made a three point hitch for mine and it is very useful. Only cost me about $125. I use my A all the time around the place.

Glad you got the tractor. Do you know any of the history of the tractor? I think you said it was from Nebraska. Does it cost much to have a tractor hauled? I have always hauled my own. Keep us posted.

I'm sure glad it all worked out for you. There are alot of good people ,but it only takes one to ruin it. I was getting kinda worried that you may of been scammed, especially after you mentioned paying for some it it by western union.

When you get the tractor in correct tuning ie; mag, carburator and valve settings, these are very easy to start. If you have to reef on them to start them, they need some fine tuning. Usually these will start by slowly rolling the flywheel and will snap right to attention when the impulse trips. I've seen guys start them with a cup of coffee in one hand.

it's derrerant for sure. i had a friend that has a bunch of vintage tractors, he started it no promblem. i just got to get my practice doing it. i'm going to get manuels for it. it also has what looks like hydro. hook ups and a squre shaft coing out on both sides, looks like a 3 point hookup, on the back, does anyone know what that is, he has a 37 a and his don't have that.

it's a rockshaft where you can put on cultivators. (lifts them up and down) I personally wouldn't want to put 3pt on a tractor of this vintage. (although they make them aftermarket) The two plug looking things are hyd. hookups, and these had to have been ADDED on sometime during it's life...because you usually find them on '43-ish and up model A's

Just make sure that you learn the right way to use the starter crank. They have been known to break shoulders, forearms and wrists as well as every now and then kill people.

I could be put to death for saying this, BUT a lot of people with flywheel start JD's around here always seem to park them pointing downhill. Either that or keep a Farmall handy to pull start them. Can't believe I said that!
