Been colder than heck here for the last week or so -10's and the old furnace aint ran once in the last month. I love having this back up wood furnace. I get my oak for free for the cutting and I think I dont have $20 invested into the last 2 years wood and I still have another years worth out back yet. Will start cutting for again next week as long as that doctors premonitions bout shingle dont come true. No sores yet but I tell that side still hurts like ol Bessy let me have one. Better get a 2nd look I guess, cant even service the wife like this.

I use a Englander free standing stove with a Chramic combuster is good for 2400 SQ FT house , But wood has to be dry I cut one year for next . I have enough cut and stacked for 1 1/2 winters.
This stove is about 85% efficent . is ten years old you can now buy reg wood bunners that are that efficent .it uses about half the wood as the stove it replaced .I use Natural Gas "Package unit with A/C" for back up unit . Also have 5500 Watt electric start generator for backup power, by using wood for primary heat power unit is big enough to use during power is off . like last week was off 23 hours due to wind storm .

Hey Dave, what kind of unit do you have? I have a fireplace in the hose and the wife will not let me bun it because she can not take the smoke smell in the house. She wanted me to convert it to natural gas but it cost waaaaa yyyy to much up here for that. Thanks, Robert

It is a model 1400 wood furnace from United States Stove Company. It is only about 2'wx3.5'wx3'h. Was only $649. Paid for itself the 1st year. Listed retail price is not even close to what they sell for. We have no smoke issues in the house at all.

I also burn wood only for heat.I have a free standing stove that puts out a lot of heat.I burn mostly eucaypts wood It is very hard and burns hot. If I wanted to cut oak I would need to travel around 60 mi. one way. Keep warm, Stan in calif.
