boy I knew this would bring a lot of answers-- thanks guys-- anyone else-- loved the stories-- for your info reg. table salt works fairly well-- pack bowl and shank with salt (plug shank end first so it don't leak out) let set for a couple of weeks , if you have enough pipes-- I just thought oneone might have a better solution , I'm working on making a pipe i saw advertisedk, that burns from the bottom up, you fill it from the top, put in the cork ? it has a screen in the bottom to keep the ash from falling out to fast-- they are made in vermont, BLW

Alright, y'all hit on a memory here. Gonna share it...

Dad lost a pipe a week. Rain, shine, day, night did not matter. He finally bought a blaze orange pipe. You know the color of your hunting vest. It was the most ridiculous thing you have ever seen. He was waiting for the day that this damnable pipe would disappear. It never did as far as I know. Every time he would lose his real pipe, he would pull this optical eyecatcher out of his pocket.

Let's go Mountaineers

Aaron

I do still smoke and heavy maybe too heavy.Use a good pipe cleaner every day. When they get very dirty I blow them out with an air hose clean them again.Sometimes I dig them out with a paper clip that gets all the cotton that comes off the pipe cleaner out. The yellow stuff is called BEE,but I drop/ loose or brake a pipe before i get to use it. Hope this helps .

John

Reminds me of the joke about the old Scotsman who never got any enjoyment out of his pipe: if he bought his own tobacco, it was so cheap it was bitter and so sharp it hurt his tongue; if he got a fill of good tobacco from a friend, he packed it so tight it wouldn't draw...

I haven't smoked my pipes for about 10 years, but I used to be a heavy (read constant) pipe smoker. I used the pipecleaners with the added stiff bristles, and for the really dirty pipes a solution I used to by in the tobacco stores that came in a small yellow squeeze bottle...can't remember what it was called. Soak the pipecleaner in that and scrub the stem and shank well, then repeat with a clean one and leave it in. Helps a lot if you've got enough of a pipe collection to avoid 'chain smoking' one pipe. I had a couple of dozen that I'd rotate through. Dang 'it. Now you're making me miss 'em....

I used grain alcohol instead of the yellow stuff. Seems to work good.
