Alan, I have never herd of a fuel filter affecting a tranny before, Could you elaborate on this for me. Just to satisfy my curiousity anyway, I plan on going with brokenwrench's idea first. I haven't the foggiest clue where they put the fuel filter on these trucks unless its on the pump in the tank. I agree that the tranny isn't bad, at least by what I know to look for, Burnt fluid, slipping drive clutches Etc. Mike.

I don`t wanna jump in where not invited, but what the heck.....
I think where Allen was going was that the delayed shift could be caused by a problem outside the transmission. A plugged fuel filter, motor miss, plugged exhaust can all affect how and when the tranny shifts. You see, the pcm(computer) watches all this information from all the various sensors on the motor and trans and makes decisions based on what it is programmed to look for. Something like a bad fuel filter throws a wrench in the process, making the computer react differently. I`m sure Allen will be along shortly to clarify better. Let us know what fixes this beast. Brokenwrench, would the recalibration affect the tow/haul mode of the tranny too? Mike.

I`m not sure what your asking. Having the PCM reflashed isn`t like putting a performance chip in. What your doing is updating the PCM to the latest calibration.

Well I haven't noticed any power loss in the engine and it runs well. Unless the filter was clogged when I bought it in march and I thought it was fine. Now that I think of it every truck I have ever had was a chevy, A 1976 Silverado, 1998 S10 blazer and now the 2000 chevy. Everyone of these were good reliable trucks but everyone shifted rather rough from 1st-2nd gear. Much more noticeable than any other shift and the new truck truck is the same. Is this normal or can this be fixed? I have driven other trucks that act the same and others still that if not for the tach. you would never know it shifted. This is not slamming into second gear but it does jerk a little if you accelerate harder which for me would be normal acceleration for other drivers. This is just enough to be anoying for me.

Hi Ol' Pard,

Don't know about you, and will admit the things made me a ton of money back in the day.

But, I really don't care if I ever see the insides of one of those devils again. I can still smell those hot converters! :>)

Yeah, I actually kinda like building them. Put in the HD reverse shell, HD forward sprag, shift kit em to turn em back to an on/off style lockup, run a carbon metallic lined torque converter, and set em up with 7 clutches in the 3-4 pack. Then you got yourself one heck of a good tranny. No more smoked converters.

Hi Mike,

I've worked both sides of the street and noticed right off that it doesn't seem to affect the Fords as it does the GMs.

One of the parameters that the computer looks at is the throttle position sensor. If you have a partially plugged fuel filter, it naturally takes a touch more throttle for any given ground speed.

The computer sees this and holds off the shift accordingly until the parameters come in.

Back in the days when the 4L60 was a cable operated tranny, I used to make all kinds of friends by just replacing a $13 filter instead of overhauling their tranny like they thought they needed and thereby saving them a bunch of money.

Your filter is under the truck; probably at the inside left frame rail about amidships. I quit GM in '99 so may be in error on this just a bit. :>(

Another bit of trivia: The garages no longer actually change out the tranny filter when they do a service. I just do not see how they get away with this practice, as that filter HAS to be changed periodically. If you ever notice it slow to engage reverse cold, the tranny filter is plugged.

Allan
