not the roofing ones, the ones that people get. Doc says probably am getting it. have real achy left side from lower front hip all the way up to under rib cage and in lower middle back, all on left side. He says that is a symptom, pee came up neg for stones or infection--- any one experience this yet, ready for a second opinion. It really hurts at times. Doing the few chores I do have really sucked, feels like I got kicked by a holstein trying to wash er up the 1st time.

Yep! Had a tractor in for repairs. Owner said have it fixed by end of week, i'll be away until then. (This was a friend fix!) Well, i tried everything i could think of to fix it, nothing worked, end of week getting closer, man due back, etc.! Started worrying on Tuesday, back started hurting on Wed.! Then the itch began! Got much worse! By Thurs. i went to Dr. Yep, he says, you got shingles, probably from worrying about yer wife's sickness! Wife had recovered before that! On Friday, i got permission to take his tractor to a repair shop, and quit worryin', Took a big bottle of "horse" pills, and got better! And, i don't worry about anything now--if it ain't done or fixed when needed, take it someplace where they know what to look for! I'm like "Old"! Old!

You said you were just getting them? Surprised the doc didn't give you anything for them. When I had them a few years ago, he told me if I had come in earlier he could have given me some kind of anti-viral stuff for them. I was too late.

I'll agree they really suck. I think mine lasted 3-4 weeks.

I don't mean to scare you, but we had a rescue call to a guy one time that thought his shingles were acting up, and it turned out he was having a stroke. Sounds like you did the right thing by seeing a doc.

Shingles are indeed a form of the Herpes virus as already mentioned. Fever blisters and genital Herpes all from the same family as shingles are....truly only difference is where the blisters appear. Chicken Pox are reputed to be the source of shingles...but regardless of the cause, Valtrex is the medicine prescribed to treat all Herpes outbreaks..including shingles. For more real information, run a search on Valtrex.

Dave, I had a mild case one time . Was able to get some medicine(can't remember what) that prevented a severe case. Doctor advised that for some reason that shingles seem to preceed certain types of cancer. Soon after I talked to a guy that had just gotten over a real bad case of shingles. He died a year or so later from cancer. I thnk he was about 47 or 48 years old.

Not meaning to scare anyone but I would try to get as much info on the shingles as posible and discuss the cancer issue with your doctor. I wish you the best.

Steve

oooooh yaaaaa ! had them a few years ago on the right side and shoulder area. it is an old wives tale that if ya get em on both sides it kills ya ! they are left over antigens from the chicky pops and for an unknown reason they are trigured as a viruse and emerge into one or more nerve paths coming off the spine to a part of the body,, hence forth the pain ! the actual reason for the pain is that the nerve ends that are affected rupture and so at that point the blister occurs and out ooozes the infection. starting signs are the "soreness like a hiefer kicked ya" and then the redness and blisters start to appear while all the time the pain goes on and on. lasts about 2 weeks. the viruse is part of the "herpes-family".

Lysine tablets help cure and/of prevent cold sores which are also a Herpes virus.Wouldn't hurt to give them a try. They are simply a form of protein-one ofv the eight amino acids--not a drug per se.Wal Mart carries them as well as most health food and drug stores.

Todays newspaper had an article on shingles in it. An old German treatment that the doctor that writes the column had no comment about, but more or less said if it works for you fine. "Apply a light coating of clear nail polish over the head of each blister. Any that don't disappear immediately get a second coat. In effect the nail polish suffocates them and they will be gone before you know it!" The person that contributed the treatment said it worked for her mother as well as some of her friends.

I neither recommend or condemm this treatment.

Ah, shingles. No, actually I haven't had them personally, but Mom had 'em and so did grandpa. Once it shows up, be sure to get to the doc for medication. Grandpa didn't, and he had a persistent case that lasted two years before he finally caved in and got the meds to clear 'em up. I personally stick with grandpa's idea that you're probably better off staying away from the doctor, but shingles is one case where I'd suggest seeing a doc as quickly as it shows up and you think that might be what it is.

Yeah I had them. Doc said it was from Chikenpox coming out of hiding. They think stress brings them out. Usually from your backbone around to the center of the body in front--either side. A really bad case is both sides.
They can kill you!
The sooner you go the the Doc and get meds the quicker they go away. If you catch them soon enough they stop bothering you if not they never quite go away.

I"ve had them but mine were on the left side of my head. Yes they are painful and they also itch like he!!!. Did they give you medicine to get rid of them. It will take awhile to get rid of them also. I"m glad I had them on my head rather than on my body somewhere as it would have been almost unbearable. I don"t envy you at all. Its said that once you get them you won"t get them again. I hope thats true. They are a hand me down of I believe of chickenpox. They are very common on senior citizens. Good luck and hope they don"t last too long.Bill
