I know a lot of people do no till but we have a field that got really rutted up that I have been waiting to try and get chisel plowed now for 6 weeks. It just keeps raining and keeping me about a day or two from ever getting out there. I decided today to get as much done on it as I could before the real bad weather got here. I walked the property a couple of days ago and thought I could get some of it done. It was awful greasy though so the going was going to be tough. I have a 4wd white with a 10 shank chisel plow that pulls pretty hard. I did end up getting about half the field done today (about 20 acres) but the rest may be to wet this year. I thought I could wait until it froze and do the frozen ground chisel plowing but it is warm and wet and getting wetter! It is kind of important to do this on this farm because if you don't it takes a lot longer to dry up in the spring. I did manage to almost end up on the stuck and troubled pics as I put the tractor in a combine rut and it went down a looooong ways into the mud. I was crossing the ruts at a right angle on other parts but I went parallell to this one and down she went. It did lumber its way out though like a log skidder! I didn't push my luck as much after that. I took some pics and will try to post them in the next couple of weeks. Anybody else chasing fall tillage because of the rain in your area. We are in the middle of Michigan and it is a soggy mess. I hear it will be a frozen white mess in about 48 hours. That is why I was trying to get something done. May be the last hurrah for this year. We still have guys around with a lot of corn and some soybeans still out there. Later people.

Well, it's not because of the weather, in fact that's cooperated nicely for us.

We were out of fuel and dad was out of work for about 1 1/2 months, but then we could finally get some again when he got new job. We got some manure out there, then we rented a chisel plow for most of it, but the last feild I started to moldboard.

Now I've got about 2-3 acres left to plow, and the tractor is in the shop and the ground is starting to freeze....

Davpal,

Here in Freeland Michigan, we have mud, muck and mire to spare. We"re also mostly no-till, but have cut up the fields so badly that it will take a lot of evening out. We also have nearly 1.200 acres of soys standing with snow comming. The corn is out,but it has been a challenging fall to say the least. We usually disk the rough spots, which this year means nearly all the field, but will wait until spring. I have seen guys chisel plowing and moldboard plowing standing water. Where in mid Mich are you?

I am right about 35 miles southwest of you just north of St. Johns. We got another 1 1/2 inches of rain last night and it is still coming down. That is about 4 inches in the last two weeks added to the over 40 inches we have had since planting. Now we are supposed to get about 10 inches of snow tomorrow so that is going to top it off. It is beyond wet here. I doesn't need to rain for a year now. I was one of those guys yesterday chisel plowing in water spots! Not good. Later.

Yeah, we've been disking corn stalks like mad the 4 days ago. Got about half done, then dad trys to back up cause he got a rock caught in disk, kills the tractor, cant get it started and wal-ah $390 for a starter, and the end of fall tillage. That's just the way it is around here! ;-)

Here in extreme north central Iowa, we had an almost perfect fall except for a hail storm that went through here at 3:30 AM on October 4th. Hail stones up to kitten ball size fell for up to one half hour. Most of the soybeans were harvested; those that were in the field were reduced to 0 to 20 bu/A. Some 200 bu/A corn fields were reduced to 10 bu/A. We didn't get hit too hard so corn yields were above 150 bu/A. That was about all the precipitation that we received so corn harvest was finished and fall tillage followed. I use a Tebben ripper to go over my soybean ground about 12 to 14 inches deep. We chop the corn stalks and then go over the corn ground with a White 435 disk chisel at 5+ mph and about 8 inches deep. We finished fall tillage on Wed, Oct 25th. I would post some pictures here, but I haven't figured that out yet.

Still a few out doing their fall tillage around me but that was because they delayed harvest due to high moisture content of corn. Some of them made the mistake of buying 100+ day corn and then got caught by a late, cold, wet spring. I went 95 day intellicoat and finished planting on May 5th so didn't have that problem. Tillage is about to come to a screeching halt because of fast approaching cold wx. "Sometimes you get the bear and sometimes the bear gets you".
