I have an 02 Sierra extended cab, with a 8 foot bed. The extended cab works great. I can put my wifes wheel chair behind her without having to fold it up. That saves that headache. the 8 foot box allows me to haul 8 foot cargo inside the canopy for security and weather conciderations. The only thing is, I found that it is much easier to park in a parking lot by backing into the spot, cause it does take lots of room to turn this thing around. I have also heard that it won't fit in most garages. I don't have one of those yet however.
Happy hunting

Thanks for the opinons, but I'm thinking of getting into crarpentry so may opt for the standard with long box. We'll have to see, but all I know is that I'm shopping in the right area and not in the dodge section ;) Paul

IMHO, the extended cab backseat is GREAT for toting gear you want to keep at hand, and warm, but not of much use for hauling any humans over about the age of 6 or 7, unless they are midgets.

I have an extended cab, and use the extra space for junque, but if the teenagers will be riding along, we take the Yukon.

I have the 6.5' box, and it really SUCKS. A couple of years ago, I was a couple of hundred miles from home, at a building center, and had purchased an oak interior door. On the way home, a storm brewed up, and I pulled over, thinking I could roll my box cover tarp over the fancy door.

WRONG! Even with the door low on the front, and high in the rear or vice-versa, the tarp wouldn't fit over the door. Another 1" or 2" of box length would have made all the difference.

All that being said though, I'm not going to rush out and buy a crew cab with an 8' box!

Depends on waht your using it for. I used to have an ext cab then when i bought the new trucdk said i was gonna keep it clean didnt carry passengers and didnt need to carry al the stuff around all the time so opted for reg cab. NOw tools flashlights etc get shoved under hte seat and roll everywehre. Dont for the 6 1/2 ft bed in my opionon. If you put a sissy tank (transfer tank(nurse tank)) and/or a toolbox theres no room left after that.

All depends on what YOU use it for.The most popular by far is the extended cab short-box.If you
are planning on hauling plywood, lumber, hay, etc.,the long-box is a must.
Occasianal hauling with passengers in mind, then the short-box is better.
The long-box extended cabs are OK,but ya need 30 acres to turn around.~brad

Extended cab 3 or 4 door is the way to go. Crew cab would be better but is sounds like you aren't concerned about passanger room probably just warm, dry storage area. Don't be discouraged by 6 1/2 foot "nay-sayers". That bed will carry 8 foot lumber (which is the industry standard for cargo length) just as well as an 8-footer, you just have to leave the tailgate open. Besides, 8-footers aren't as easy to come by in 1/2-ton application.

Extended cab is the only way to travel. Better yet a 4 dr. Depends on the plan of usage. Builing fence standard cab. Know a city guy that got a new 4 dr chev z 71 with a topper and bed liner. Sounds like a person who opts to wear a belt and supenders. I know the 6 1/2 box is useless for 12 ft lumber.
