Need You Gut Level Assessment. Please?

Hi Guys,

Here's the deal I tripped across:

Neighbor who feeds 1,000 head of cattle bought this New Holland 855 baler 2 or 3 years ago on a farm sale. Bought it solely as a stand-by machine. He bought it and parked it; has never used it because his main machine hasn't went down on him yet.

Said that the original owner stated at the auction that they had been using the baler; works A-Okay.

Subsequently, my neighbor has just bought one of those big John Deere $40K balers and wants to move these two 855's out of his yard.

The main baler is tired and I'm not interested it it.

However, I went over there this morning and really looked this "standby" machine over. Can't have had 3,000 bales run thru it. Rollers aren't dimpled one bit, sprockets are good and the chain "appears" like a new one.

The only thing I can see wrong with the unit is that the left pickup wheel has been smacked; it is bent and doesn't run straight ahead. Also, the air bag sliding rods look as though they could use some bushings.

I know it is hard to tell from the pictures, but what do you think of this baler? It is a hydraulic tie; not the auto-wrap. He's got the price set "very neighborly".

Thanks for your opinion,

Allan

I'm sure by now you probably have it pulled home. But, I just wanted to say; that the only "good deals" I've ever regretted, are the ones I DIDN'T go ahead and buy.
Lean on that old 60's wisdom of: "If it feels good, just do it"!

Looks pretty good. Still got most of the paint on the bands between the pickup teeth. To bad it's not an Auto-wrap but if the price is right go for it.

Man, I wish you were closer to me. I`d be on your heels to grab whichever one you reject. Either that all fixed up 851 or this good lookin 855. We baled for years with an 855. Other than a bearing here or there, and an occasional broken bar, that thing would take anything you could run through it. Ours would go from grass hay, to alfalfa, to straw, and to cornstalks and never miss a beat.

I like the hyd tie, you can decide how much twine to put on. The only bummer is when you hit the wrong lever and the gate cracks open:(
Everything comes to a screaching halt, usually could get em going again if you backed into another bale though.

If the price is good and you can swing it, I`d pick it up.
Those old beasts are getting hard to find in any decent shape anymore. Trust me, I`ve been waitng for one to cross my path. Good luck Brokenwrench

It barely has any paint worn off! You're going to have to build a nice big machine shed to keep all your toys at this rate. Get a cab for the 966 and both you and the Mrs. can each have a tractor and baler. Then you will need more land for hay because you get what you have rolled up way too soon. So the cycle continues.

From what I can see that baler looks on great shape. If the price is good go for it. Shoot, you have those minor problems fixed in no time and be sippin hot coco in a week.

We use one esrly this summer on the reclaimed field. Lots of stubble and woody plants. Man, that dude just baled all that junk up and never missed a beat.

That's why I'm looking at it, Sam.

Until that big John Deere came out, nothing in the world could touch these things. They are just a "monster" baler. Heck, the chain uses #80, heavy duty chain with a 2" tube and like ya say, they'll bale trees.

I really think the thing would go to the field right now with just the addition of a hitch pin.

Yeah it still has the buyers auction number chalked on it. Get it hauled home and start another winter project Allan. You know what it needs, swing by NH and price some parts again.

Now Glen,

One thing I didn't mention. :>(

Would ya think that this would be much of a detremint to the baler itself? :>) :>) :>)

Naw that wouldn't hurt it. That JD oil in it yet might make those red tractors run good lol. I don't think we ever pulled a NH baler with anything but a JD. Neighbor that bought our old square NH has had it behind a Ford. GASP !! :)

Allan if you ever need IH tips let me know.

I bet I got 40 of them that I took off.

I switched my blocks on my 1086 to ISO when I bought the MX.

I'll ship to you. Kinda a trade for that front end.

Wow looks like near new from here. No freight and he''ll probably get tired of seeing the other one around after awhile and make you a small pass on that one too. Then you can have one behind each of the tractors and get into the custom baling business. Think of it, sitting in those nice cabs out of the dust and sun and having fun making money. I think we should start the search for a cab for the 966 this afternoon. Probably get one for 200 bucks or less out here. Shall I call out the hounds to start the hunt? Migraine

Hi Allan,
It's not a bad looking baler. But didn't you get your's all fixed up? There's nothing wrong with it is there? Can't the one you have handle all of your baling? If I remember right, you did quite a bit of work on your baler, so you now know it pretty well, you've used it, you know how it works, kinda getting a feel for it. Now this new baler... you say it hasn't made that many bales. Is it in a lot better shape than your old one? Is getting this actually going to put you money ahead (If you have some work to do to get your old baler as good as this), or are you just looking at this new one and saying, It looks nice, it's bigger, I want it. Now you're starting to sound like me, I have something that works good (for me), but I see something else that I want.

Were you looking for a new baler before you seen this one, or is it, "I see it I want it?"

Sorry about sounding so negative, If it was me, I'd buy it only if I'd think this new one would put me money ahead.

later,
Brett

Thanks Brett,

That's exactly why I posted this here.

Naw, my baler is a gem of an outfit; just works like a new one. It does need a slip clutch, which I was gonna put in this winter anyway, but other than that, nothin wrong with it at all.

I just happened to "stumble" across this one yesterday.

I have a feeling your neighbor wouldn't sell it to you if it was junk. It looks good to me, and would sure as heck look good behind that 966.

I don't think sitting for 2-3 years in your climate will have hurt it much, if at all. Some new balers sit on dealer lots that long.

Did ya figure out what that feller was talking about with regard to that "finger" or whatever?

Good luck!

Yeah,

That was on the other baler. The chain is setting there with slack in it so it has got to be one of the forming cams that he was talking about.

That unit has been used tho. Like I say, he feeds 1,000 head of cattle and the machine is showing signs of thin sheet metal on the walls.

So, I didn't spend a heck of a lot of time around that one.

I don't know enough about a baler any more to make an honest assesment, but the darn thing looks almost new? surely that bent wheel is a very minor thing.

Yes Sir,

That wheel is nothin'; I can straighten it with a bar and about 5 minutes woth of "tug".

It is time to put a slip clutch in my baler 'cause it is starting to get a little sloppy. Other than that, it'll probably run me another 10 years, easy.

But, this 855 is the "Big Mama" of New Holland's chain balers and I can buy it for 'bout twice the price of that new slip clutch.

Dunno, I just don't like being broke down when there's hay to put up and I'm thinkin' that it wouldn't hurt to have another cheap baler setting around just for "emergency's" sake.

Allen, Why not buy you a big John Deere baler? Then you could have one as good as your neighbors. 'Sides they are good balers. Then you wouldn't have any trouble for several years and you'd be setting Jake. Don

Careful with that thinkin'! I used an oliver 620 baler that we rebuilt, then a nice 720 came along, more capacity, so were trying to buy it.

Last baling, the 720 broke down, pulled out the 620 and it broke down too! Now I got 2 headaches!
I'm gonna sell the 620!
Good luck!

It isn't anything you can't fix. As long as his price is low enough you can still smile and wave to your neighbor using all your fingers if it turns out to be junk.. Go for it. You know what best to do with your dollars. Paint looks decent. Balers wear out eventually, neighbors can wear out much faster but the junk man doesn't take em.
