Hi.. I have been out of touch since Thanksgiving while travelling to Phoenix. I had to weigh in on the kidney stone deal. Most of them seem to be calcium, but there are 5 types in all according to the Dr. in the er room. A lack of calcium seems to cause formation of them. I have not had any since 1990. I started drinking liquid minerals ( 1 oz a day) from New Vision located in AZ. (1-800-minerals) Very healthy for everyone in many other areas as well. ..John..

For calcium supplement take calcium citrate, not calcium carbonate. Don't get dehydrated too often. Most people walk around in a slightly dehydrated state in spite of all the water bottles out there. Orange juice, cranberry juice , lemonaide are all good preventative measures. I'll bet a good big glass of wine everyday would help as well. PS. I'm not a Doctor and the above advice is free. I do listen to a lot of Dr shows on the radio as I drive around.

Knock on wood, I have not had an attack for about 2 years. I read in a magazien that the acid in grapefruit casued kidney stones, used to drink a lot of grapefruit juice, now none, and no kidney stones, also drink at least 5-6 16.9oz bottles of water per day and a soda every once in a while, but not many like used to.

Kidney stones are the absolute worst pain I've ever had. There ARE different types, and an individual's particular body chemistry plays into the mix, also.

What works to prevent them for one person may not help another. Drink plenty of water.

I've had five or six over the years and different doctors have offered treatment. The first was a low calcium diet but most were drink lots of water to keep the kidneys active and flushed so the mineral doesn't form the stones.
At my weight 'lots' of water is two quarts a day minimum winter, summer, hot or cold. For me it seems to work. My last attack ran from Thursday to Monday. Drinking water is a whole bunch better.

I've had them chronically for last 15 years. Had about 6 or 7 by now. The best thing for me was to stop drinking pop. Used to have them every 3 years like clock work. Have went 5 now without pop. I also have them in the same kidney. Doc said peanuts were one of the worst things to eat if you get the clacium oxilate like mine. God Bless you if you get them.

I have had kidney stones for many years.
As to the cause for me, I believe it to be a defective kidney as they have all been from that one kidney.
I have also heard the follow ing causes from DR's.
Too much calcium.
Too little calcium.
eating green beans.
soft drinks

I am not sure they really know the cause/s.
