Can anyone tell me what makes the condensor in the distributor go bad? I put a new set of points and condenser in last winter when it stopped running while pushing snow. It ran fine all summer working the garden and things, but about two weeks ago iot quit again. The consdenser was bad again. Any ideas? Thanks, Alan

My 48 ferguson to-20 stopped running soon after starting about a week ago on a 20 degree morning. Waited till it warmed up to check it out. Not a frozen fule problem. seems to have a very weak spark. Can a 12 volt condensor be used in the 6 volt system?

When you get it running again, put a voltmeter on the wire going to the dist. while it is running. If you have over 4 volts, change the resistor on the front side of the dash by the ampmeter.

Thing like excess heat,,,,, excess current,,,,, ,and vibration can lead to premature condensor failure. Another bad thing can be a loose connection from it to the distributor.. Make sure its clean n bright where it contacts distributor and shes mechanically screwed down tight n solid.

Cheap manufacture, cheap materials. A capacitor is a device which should last for years, unless it is subjected to over-voltage. I would think that a lot of the cheap junk parts supplied these days are not rated high enough, and so have marginal tolerance to high voltage spikes and thus a short life-span.
I have only replaced a couple or so in my life and only once was it the capacitor that actually caused the breakdown.

The are high inductive voltages across a condenser when the points open.About 200 volts, import makers use poor insulation that breaks down.Moisture gets into poorly sealed condensers and converts them into a resistor.Ford used oil filled condensers in the fifties, they gave little trouble. If you have a good one that shows no metal transfer on the points leave it alone. The new replacement may be junk.
