I sent my Angus bull up the road for the summer, he was to be pastured for the summer in exchange for his services. It didn't cost me, it saved me some pasture at home, the fellow that got him was happy and cost him a summers worth of pasture for the bull. We both felt it was a good exchange. The bull was BIG and docile, but he ate like a herd of buffalo. When the summer was over I sold him to a Mennonite farmer, as I decided to keep some of my heifers, replaced him with a new bull and the whole swap meet didn't cost me a cent!

Virgil:

I rented 2 high end Angus bulls this summer. I paid $10/hd for 30 heifers. The only thing I would advise you to do if you do rent, is to have a clear understanding, or a contract about who is responsible in case of death or injury of the bull. I did insure the bulls also as if they were my own.

It is also fairly common around here to get the bulls for free, you just feed them for the summer. If it is done that way, you have the liability for the other guys bulls.

Its become very common here in the last few years. Usually $500-800 for a 90 day breeding season.

well here in central MO, I pay $10 per cow plus feeding the bull. I sold most of my heard to get this new property, so I only have 6 cows right now. I get a good deal I think because there are a few people who still don't mind help each other.

Years ago when I had a dairy I had a cattle dealer that would bring me bulls for free. All it cost me was the feed. I can't see renting bulls and giving the feed away but is does cut your risk.

Well the advantage is when your done with the breeding season the bull is gone and out of your hair. Plus you can save heifers back and get a different bull. It also comes off your taxes that year.

Going rate around here is around $400 for the summer. This is for young bulls.

Never knew they rented them. Tried renting myself out up in Springfield awhile back, but can't live on $4.00 a night.

Good young Angus bulls down here in the Ozrks are usually about $1200.00 to $1500.00. The one I got now is two years old, docile, and good conformation and cost $1200.00 about three months ago. He is purebred but just not registered.
