Hi guys, The natural gas forced air furnace in my shop is 9 years old, neither me nor the previous owner has ever done any preventive maintenance on it.

What can or should be done to it? If anything.

Make sure power is off first ! Be safe ! If you're not carefull you can lose your eyebrows !If you can reach your burners, clean them with a wire brush and blow them out with an air compressor they will burn orange for quite a bit while burning dirt and dust when you first fire up the furnace. Watch the burners, blue with a little yellow orange candle shape flame is best, if it's more whitish yellow, burners need adjusted. watch burners when blower engages, if burners get eradic when blower engages, large cracks could be the culprit... when someone finds a crack it needs to be substancial to cause problems, however, cracks don't get better.... if the cavity around the burners (heat exchanger)is full of suet clean them well !! blow them out good! always oil the blower. tap the pilot assembly while pilot is lit and blow out with air compressor and relight pilot, unless it's electronic spark or hot surface ignition. good luck.

have a furnace guy come out and do a clean and check. they clean the burners, set the supply pressures and adjust the flame. cost me about 110.00. a lot cheaper than burnin the shop down.
