I "need" a truck to pull my trailer/tractors to local shows, etc.. It seems I'll never be able to get the truck I want, with raising a family and all. So, I'm looking in the paper this morning and there's this '88 Chevy 3500(non dualy) for sale. It is a BARE bones work truck. No body damage, not too rusty, 3 speed auto trans, 350 engine, good windshield....$800. Drive train is solid/dependable. What gas mileage can I expect? What do you think? I'llbe trailering up to 12,000#.

I run a 1980 Chev heavy half, I get around 17 MPG loaded or unloaded. Lots bad, has holes in the floor and is an ugly orange paint job but I don't care it always goes when I want and hauls any thing I want. Nice thing is that it has a 4 speed and is a 4X4 flat bed. I payed $1200 for it 3 years ago and wouldn't take less then $3000 for it now but I have added a number of things to it

The 350 engine, coupled up to that 3 speed auto trans, will be very underpowered and will result in somewhere around 6 to 8 MPG. Or less.

That sounds really cheap for a good runner, if it is indeed that solid Id jump on it. Down here in fla. trucks are high same truck down here would most likely be 2k+ and dont be worried because its not a dually its still got the suspension, bearings, brakes, etc. that you want, if ya like chevies that is..lol

Thank you fellas for your responses. I have a good wife. We went over and looked at it together this afternoon. She was not impressed. I grew up on a dairy farm in the 60's. Well do I remember the first truck dad bought...a '48 Chevy 3/4 ton stake rack(dad was probably 50 years old). It had holes in the cab big enough for a cat to crawl through, but it did everything a new truck would do. Dad believed in paying cash for EVERYTHING and that truck was quite an improvement over the car and trailer it replaced. My wife's position is that, if I were on the farm a truck like that would still make a lot of sense. She "promised" me we'd put our heads together and within a year I'll get a truck she wouldn't be embarassed to take to work if need be. I know that old truck would do all I need it to do, but I suppose a person doesn't always have to be 100% practical.
