A friends mf65 was smoking like a train a few years ago ,I had to keep way back behind him on the road to avoid the smoke , I cleaned the air breather oil bath also under side of gause above oil bath that evening and it ran beautifully ,still going 10 years later . also check the air breather hose is not collapsing when the engine is reved up, those engines are almost indistructable

Are you just telling us about your tractor or do you have a question? 40 years on, it has lasted well. It may deserve an overhaul. It may have had two or more previous overhauls, I don"t know.

Do a compression test or compressed air test on your engine. You may find out it is a bit low on compression. Your oil control rings may be at the end of their useful life. You may have oil leaking down the exhaust valve guides, although that is less likely on a diesel. You may have broken compression rings from using ether.
Does it lose compression into the water jacket?
I would suspect it may be needing a good overhaul.

yes it was a question thanks for the response it doesnt loose compression into the radiiator it doesnt have compression when it sittin you can turn it over by hand if ya crank it up then cut it off you cant hardly move the fan by hand then you can hear air hissing when it stopes you can turn it over easily by hand again

If you have no compression at cranking speeds, you definately have a problem. Are the valve settings correct? I had forgotten about the possibility of a blocked air cleaner as I would expect it to be checked regularly.
Sounds very much like valves or rings. A compressed air check would let you know where the air is leaking to.

the snort of either is only in cold wether not engine cold and oil pressure at operating temp
