Antifreeze tire ballast offer

I am looking at a job where I may have to dispose of approximately 2000-3000 gals of 20% ethlylene glycol mixed with water. The mixture was run in PVC pipe and is clean.

In an automotive engine, that ratio is good for about 15-20 degrees. I assume below that temperature, the mixture turns to slush. I am not sure it will ever freeze solid even at -20.

If my assumption is correct, this would make great tire ballast.

I am wondering if there is any interest on this board for free ballast. I am located near Lowell, MA. One would have to bring their own containers.

If response to this offer is good, it will affect my bid. My email is open.

Why not recycle it and reuse it that what we do at work ,as for tires if you blow a tire the epa could have fun with you if it happens in the wrong place or it kills animals .

The owner, which is a large medical institution, had a previous contractor remove some of the antifreeze. In fact, it was assumed that all of it was extracted. I believe it cost the owner $4 per gal to dispose of it in addition to labor costs.

Now they want to get rid of the tanks and piping. I discovered the left over antifreeze and I am looking for a way to recycle it. From time-to-time people on the Farmall board have indicated that they use antifreeze in liew of CaCl.

I would also like to recycle about 45 miles of 1/2" flexible PVC tubing and 35ea 2000 gal insulated polyethylene tanks. I am not giving that material away should I get the job. I am thinking of sending that stuff to Vermont for use with the maple syrup harvest. I have other options as well. My fall back position is to scrap all the plastic. It has value.

All this material was used to make ice during off-peak hours. The ice was used to supplement the AC system. The owner has recently renegotiated his power contract and no longer needs the "ice tanks" and piping.

I wouldn't be surprised if the previous contractor sold the antifreeze to an OEM mfg. That is something I need to look into. 2000-3000 gal is less than a truckload and may not be marketable.

2-3000 gal you could sell it for 2 bucks a gallon easy just have people bring there own jugs ,but I don't think you would get away with using tubing that has had hazardous material in it for food grade products but tubing could be sold to people using it for radiant heat in floors

About the food grade. That is a tough call and the plastic would have to be tested. One also has to understand that the volitiles in the plastic are likely to disappear with the vented steam. Many sap operations have abandoned buckets. The modern sugarbush is now a web of plastic lines.

I am just fishing for ideas. The standard for radiant floors is now PEX (cross-linked polyethlylene). It may be that flexible PVC is a superior product but not economic for cost reasons. That angle has to be looked at.

IF you think ethylene glycol is non-toxic, you are very much mistaken. It is very poisonous.
Has, in the past been added, in small quantities, to cheap wine to sweeten it and killed a lot of people.

Propylene glycol is the non toxic antifreeze.

Why bother with trucking. Install a pipeline instead. That could then be used for other transfers at small cost!!
