I got a Steiger Cougar built in 1973 I would like to add a PTO to it, what do I need? I figure on using a hydraulic motor and just couple it up to a unused remote, 540 RPM would be all I need.
Can somebody tell me what hydraulic motor to buy for this application?

Unless it is a very slight load(5-10 hp(,a hydraulic motor will probably not do the job you want.To have any power, the motor will have to be fairly large, then add a gearbox to drive the shaft, plus it will take alot of oil flow to run it,and require a motor spool in your valve bank. While it is running,I doubt if you will have enough pump flow in reserve to even operate a cylinder on another remote without affecting the power and speed of the pto.
Abilene Machine or Big Tractor Parts have salvaged a number of Steigers and will probably have a take out PTO assembly for your tractor but it will be the large diameter 1000 rpm stub.

I remember seeing a motor with a PTO spline built in..I think maybe , Surplus Center.com Also you will need to get a motoring valve to operate the pto motor..This will allow you to start and stop the motor without a sudden jolt starting and a "hydraulic lock" stop..This valve has small cuts in the side of the spool that will allow the hydraulic pressure to bleed until the spool is fully engaged..You can install this valve after the remotes ,inline , with a return line from valve exhaust going back to sump..

Be sure your sales person for the motor understands your aplication. Some motors will not withstand any side loading on output shaft. It can seen on disasembly after it fails.
