I would like to buy a tractor for my small acreage. Which one would be best in terms of low required repair and maintentance?

1. 1979 Ford 4100 1300 hours 3 point hitch loader PTO $11,900 (dealer)
or
2. 1975 Ford 3550 cab, bucket, blade, PTO and 3 point hitch 60 HP $5750.00 (private sale)
Which one should I buy? Any advice is greatly appreciated!
Thanks! Val

To my way of thinking, the 4100 is overpriced. It's also not a great loader tractor with the light front axle. Otherwise, it's a good tractor.
The 3550 doesn't seem too bad in price to me, depending on condition. However, it's not 60 hp. I'd say more like 40 without actually checking. If I'm not mistaken, that's an industrial model, and should have a heavy front axle... So that would be better for loader work. You would also want to check on what transmission it has, and whether or not it has live PTO. It's possible that it has a manual reversing transmission... in which case I doubt it has live PTO. You've also got to watch the 8 speeds as they also don't all have live pto.
If you've looking mostly for a loader tractor, then the 3550 might be OK, depending on it's condition. You've really got to look any of these old things over well. That may be an OK price, or the thing could be scrap.... It certainly won't hurt you to keep looking more.

What is the tractor going to be needed for? Also what could you possibly need it for in the future that may need it bigger or have certain options. I cant see you getting a deal at a dealer unless you know them or they have had it foever in the lot, or it is on consignment.

For one thing, a 3550 is not 60 hp. It is only 50 engine hp for a diesel (about 45 pto hp). You did not say if either was gas or diesel. Both these tractor have the same engine if they are diesels.
1300 hours is extremely low of a 1979 tractor. Does it look like it is almost new?
Don't know much else about the tractors.
