I want a tool that I can insert into the spark plug hole on a tractor motor and measure the stroke of that motor. I do not want to remove the head! Something real simple. I have searched and called a lot of company's with no luck. I have been told that something like this is out there, but I am not able to find it. Does anyone have an idea on this?

Flat head or OHV? Flat head might be straight forward if plug is over bore, but the other ideas would need some form of confirmation as they may not be too precise.
And what about oversize liners/pistons? High compression pistons?
Where do you want to stop?
And how about the oil burners?

Assuming you don't need a percise measurement. How about a string and lead fishing weight?

Drop weight in hole with the piston at top dead center (verified with screw driver) mark string with felt tip marker. Spin crank 180 deg (piston down) and mark string again. Measure the distance between the marks.

I would reapeat it a couple time to verify the measurement.

Pretty hard to do on a horozontal engine like a J D. 2 cyl. You won't need to check the JD 2 cyl's anyway because they don't need to cheat to win.

Errin OH I kinda like that idea. I plan on doing this to someone else tractor (tractor pulling). I am concerned about looseing the weight though in the motor.

Thanks BUDD

It needs to go down through the plug hole!

look at the end of the handle.

A small wire like thing protrudes. That is a depth guage.

You could determine the depth when piston is up comapre that gainst depth when piston is down and Viola! stroke is obtained.

I've done it before using a long dipstick and a tape measure. Not sure its the smartest thing I've ever done, always afraid I would scratch a wall.
