A year and a half ago I purchased a new Sears 48" Garden Tractor with a Briggs and Straton 26 HP engine. Well the unit has worked o.k. except for minor deck problems but all of a sudden the engine started smoking white smoke. After checking all the stuff the service dept suggested I finally had a service tech. come to the house to inspect the motor. His conclusion was that dirt had gotten into the cilinders and sanded the walls and oil was on the plugs fouling them out so I needed a new engine. Of course the warranty has run out, however he said it was my problem. Not Sears. He said the filter system on the BS engine was not effective and he had seen other machines doing the same thing. All of this took less than 20 minutes and cost 80 bucks so he was no help. AANYONE ELSE OUT THERE WITH THIS SAME PROBLEM LET ME KNOW AS I AM CONSIDERING GETTING AN ATTORNEY FOR A CLASS ACTION SUIT AGAINST BRIGGS AND STRATTON. OR ANY SUGGESTIONS OR HELP WITH THIS PROBLEM. THANKS.

Get your manuals put and read them. most Briggs engines have a 2 year warranty, but it will be through Briggs, not Sears.

Bill, I am so amazed how we RUN to sleazy Lawyers
who pocket all the money and you get a few cents.
We want stuff cheap and it could never be possible
of course, that something happened by accident or
something that we could have done wrong. Always
the other guy's fault. Chuck

Sounds like maybe a plug fouled out.
Go back to mfg. spec than up one heat range.
Put a few ounces of MMO in a full tank of gas.

Thanks, put an anti fouling device on plugs which helps. Will try hotter plug.

I have a little TORO mower with I think a 12 HP or so motor.

I used to get backfires every time I shut it off. The solution to that is to shut it off with the throttle close to full speed. Appearantly those newer motors are designed that way.

I also got white smoke occassionally, but I could never figure out where it was from. It would happen randomly, smoke like mad for a few seconds, then stop. Maybe once every other time I used the tractor. I just ignored it (for better or worse).

If it back fires when you shut it off, it is because it is hot and the fuel exploded in the hot cylinder or muffler. Let it idle for a minute to cool off a bit and it probably won't back fire. Dave

I'd run it by a small engine repair shop that is certified to do B&S warranty work whether it's still in warranty or not as they would know more.

Thanks for the reply. Yea I am in the process of contacting B&S and will try and find an authorized service center. Maybe up around Dallas or Ft. Worth.

Thanks.

Normally if an engine is smoking white smoke, it is not from oil consumption. Oil smoke is blue. Quite possibly the white smoke is from oil that is thinned out with gasoline, the gasoline gets into the oil then is so thin, it will start burning the oil, and it will be a blueish/white smoke and a lot of it. It can get gas in the oil from a bad fuel pump, or contaminated fuel. What did this "tech" do to come to the conclusion you destroyed your engine? If he did not do a cylinder leakdown test or remove the heads, he does not have a clue what is wrong with your engine. Briggs engine have a very good filtration system on their 26hp engines. Now, it is critical that you read the owners manual on how to properly put the air filter cover on. Improper installation of the air filter can be a problem if you do not pay attention.

Thanks for the reply. He basically pulled the plugs and tested the compression I guess which he said was o.k.. That was it. As far as the air cleaner, you bet I read the manual and change every month or so during the summer as it is so dusty here in Texas. I have to do the same thing on my big John Deere Tractor. The oil was purchased from Sears and is check every couple of days. I notice that we are not using a lot of oil and the smoke is more white than black except when we start up. Thanks.

Sears ain't what it used to be but try to get customer service from Walmart,Home depot,Harbor freight tools or a place like that. At least Sears still has parts availabe and books to find the parts when you need them. Maybe if we didn't try so hard to save a buck at Sears competitors they would still be able to serve customers the way they used too.

Yea, except their track record and warranty repairs with me here in Texas is very bad. Also, their prices are a rip off. Example, replacment batter for tractor 137.00 Sears. Same battery Tractor Supply $35.00. Air filters 5 to 6 bucks high than B&S replacement parts from Tractor Supply.

Sorry, Sears is a thing of the past and probably is now the last place I would make a major purchase over $100.00 dollars.

Just my reaction.

My old sears with an Onan engine did the same under light load.
It was not fireing on one cyl and the blowby was forcing oil out of the crank case vent into the air cleaner. Compression was good, changed plugs and it was okay. If you see oil inside the air cleaner it's likely going through the carb and making the white smoke. Would take a lot to dust your engine cutting grass, not like cultivating a dusty field all day.

I changed the spark plugs and put a and anti fouling device on them which helps as after just a couple of hours without the device I had oil on one plug already. Yea for my pastures I have a John Deere with a brush hog and I use that. This mower is for just around the house and 1 1/2 AK. the other thing was the unit was popping and back firing and the Sears guys said I needed a new carbarator for 100 bucks plus installation. I cleared it out a couple of times and improved the running somewhat but it still is not smooth. Thanks. Bill

i think that JT is on the right track about the fuel pump. when the diaphram go"s bad it will leak gas threw the intake and into your oil and thin it out. the thin oil will then pass by your piston and burn threw the exhaust making you think that the rings or cylinder is bad. i think this is a common promblom on the twinn cylinder briggs. i rebuilt my fuel pump and the promblom went away. its somewhere to start. lets us know.
