I have a I/H Super-A tractor about 1952 vintage. According to my service manual, either a zenith or Marvel carburetor is used on this particular model. The carburetor on my tractor is a Carter. There is no ID tag on the unit, but on the fuel bowl it says: CARTER
UT
O -1177

I've had this tractor for about 30 years, and evidentally the carb was changed before I obtained it. It does run, but I've got to shut off the gas supply everytime I shut the tractor off, or it floods and gas drips from the carb, and I need to use starter fluid to start it in cold weather.I'd like to rebuild this carb, but I'm unable to find any information about this particular unit. Maybe it's from a different tractor manufacturer? Can anyone supply me with information about finding a rebuild kit and what the float height is suppose to be, and any other useful information I need to overhaul the carburetor?? Thanks

Tom:

You might try Marshall Tractor Parts in Cynthiana, KY. they seem to carry a lot of parts for Super A models.

I have a '53 Super A with original owner's manual. Although my tractor has a Zenith carb, the manual also shows Carter and Marvel-Schebler carburetors as standard equipment for the Super A in 1953. Also, my factory Super A parts book shows a Carter rebuild kit from your Case/IH dealer, part #354-918-R92.

In prior discussions on this forum, the topic of "best carb for a Super A" has come up. It seems, in the opinion of most, the Zenith and Marvel-Schebler are almost neck and neck for best, and the Carter is a distant 3rd. Assuming that is correct, you may wish to take this opportunity to find a used Zenith or M-S on ebay and get a rebuild kit for it instead of sinking more money into the Carter.

The only "trick" I have encountered with the Super A Zenith is, when you set the float level, be generous; i.e., if it says set it at 1 5/32", then set it at 1 8/32" or even 1 9/32". Otherwise, you may have problems with richness and flooding as the tractor rocks and bounces across the ground.

I also have another '53 Super A equipped with a Marvel-Schebler carb. It has given no problems whatsoever. I am happy with both brands. Have never owned a Carter, but have heard some of the guys have been less than thrilled with them.

Forgot to mention: Usually the rebuild kits provide information as to float level setting, etc. Also, before you tear yours to smithereens, measure the float level as you take it apart. It may be wrong, but at least it is a reference point. I have found that to be helpful.

Tom,
My '51 Super-A owners manual lists three gasoline carburators: Zenith, Marvel Schebler, and Carter, so yours could be original equipment.

Thanks so much for the information. When I obtained this tractor, I mailed for a service manual from IH. It's dated 1971, which must be a reprint, and it only shows the Zenith and Marvel carbs. You may be right then, that a Carter could have been used as one of the original carbs. I wonder why my manual doesn't show it? Can anyone post or e-mail me some pictures of the carter carb(s)from their manuals? It may be handy to have photos of the insides before I tear this one apart. Thanks again, you and Mike have cleared up some of the questions I've had.
Tom

That link didn't help. I'd like to rebuild my own carb. No one listed a Carter UT. Thank's anyway
