Well i went and done it now! Broke my foot, Dont ask me how, cause i still dont know how I did it. But with the constant feeling of being useless, and fequent spikes of pain the past few days has thrown my sanity against the ropes. But it also opened my eyes. While hobbling around grocery stores and the local K-mart i found myself constantly in the way of other people. Primarily because i couldnt move as fast as them, i found many of them to be inconsiderate and constantly in a hurry. No matter what side of and isle, or method i used to get out of the way didnt work. I felt like a rabbit caught in the middle of the expressway. Then my thoughts turn to the elderly and the disabled, maybe we shouldnt always be in a constant rush makeing the few who are slower in this world feel like they are holding us back. I guess it goes to the old saying, people in time will forget what you have said, people will forget what you have done, people NEVER ferget how you made them feel....Good Sunday to you!, oh by the way drop me a post you know just to keep me busy!DTURKE

Here's a tip I learned when I was on crutches/cast to the waist. If you have to go to the store for a few things (scripts, a bottle of 80 proof pain killer, etc.) limit yourself to what you can carry in one hand and ask for it in a plastic bag. Reason: you can hold the loops of a plastic bag while operating crutches. I was also fortunate that there was a convenience store a few miles away with a drive-up window. They would go fetch whatever I needed. Good luck.

I had a total hip replacement 3 years that left me on a walker, then crutches for a while, but due to it's extreme deterioration before replacement I will be using a cane for the rest of my life. In my area I have found just the opposite as far as courtesy goes. People have been extremely courteous as far as lines, opening doors, etc. in this area. What does really bug me though is the number of people using handicap parking permits that don't appear to have any need of them. I suspect many of them are for other members of the family, but they use them when that member is not along. It burns me to see a young person park in a handicap spot (with a sticker on car) , go into the store at a run, while I am parking 30 or 40 yards away and hobbling with a cane.

Hi DTurke,

Sounds like my first X-mass experience when I was on my crutchs. I'm hobbling down the main isle when a woman was walking towards me and wasn't going to move so I stopped and she continued walking right upto my face.

She said "you gonna move or what" I leaned over and replyed "go F yourself". This is pretty typical of the type of person your gonna meet while hobbling around.

From the voice of experience, do NOT let them put you in a Western Walker boot, aka, bunny boot, as you'll regret that move. Suck up the pain and keep trying to use the foot. If you ware the boot for even a small amount of time there's a good chance you'll loose some if not all of your foot movement.

Another is don't use just a one side support (crutch/kane) as then you might develope low back and shoulder problems. Either use both crutchs or don't. Adjust your crutchs so they do NOT touch your arm pits and pick your weight with your hand bar.

I shattered all the bones in my forefoot and damaged the nerves in the bones at the same time and now have what's called RSD (Reflex Sympathic Dystrophy) the 44th type of MD, (they study the first 40 types of MD). Feels like your on fire with the slightest touch.

what really raises my hackles is when i had a broken leg and i had to use a motorized shopping cart at kroger and other stores, almost every time someone who was walking better than me would grab the last cart and drive around until the batteries were dead and then get off and walk out like they were perfectly healthy and had no regard for temporarly handicapped people. try walking on crutches the entire area of Kroger and Wallymart. it is sure a challenge. i really do have a lot of respect for the physical handicapped people as i was one and glad that i am not now. "what goes around, comes around".

I hope you heal up soon and well. I know how you feel. When we lived in Bay City over 25 yrs ago, my son and I were skating by the river on a rink the city made. He was skating along the edge, and I was going to skate rapidly toward him and spray him with ice chips by stopping suddenly by him, but under a small layer of snow was a deep crack which dumped me into the frozen side and severely sprained my ankle. The Dr. said I would have been better off to break it. Being in construction, you get no pay when youre off, so 2 weeks was all I could take. At work, I had to hobble around without the aid of crutches and soon came to be known as 'step and a half'. What town do you live near in MI?

Gidday Mr. Turke! Sorry to hear about your Break. I grew up in Port Huron. I was wondering where you hailed from. If the St.Clair Inn (I hope I've got that right) is still going, you should slip over there for good meal, since you have some time on your hands. East coast is home now. Stopped being a "Michigander" back in 1981. Take care. Kent in NB.

I had a hip replacement on September 27th and not long after that I was at Wal-Mart heading up to the check out line with my walker moving as fast as I could and a lady that looked to be 66+ years old flat cut in front of me very rudely which was very upsetting because she had several items while I had only a few.She was old enough to know better but flat didn't care.Others that age will cut you off and run right in a parking space you have been waiting on too with no remorse.I guess what I am trying to say is all ages are getting into this rudeness and hastiness.

Sorry for your misfortune. Hope you get well quick. Youre words of the elderly and infirm are thoughts of Charity that sorry to say have virtually disappeared from our fast paced life. Chasing the Buck[$] I feel is entirely[99%] the blame for our modern day disdain for some less fortunate than we.Concern for others I am of the opinion largely started to dissappear in the lifetime of my Generation. My childrens Generation furthered this disregared and my grand children I am sure will deepen the thoughtless self positioning of [get out of my way-I was here first} It is saddening to see this happening but it is a sign of the time so I simply step aside and ignore the rudeness most,[not all certainly], people show to thier fellow person and when I am the reciever of a polite persons offer to me the old time feeling of "maybe it is not so bad after all " returns and I usually back slide and feel good about the situation I am in. Enough of that, Now, Yestrday I went to the EDGETA Tractor show at the "Saquaro Ranch Park" in Glendale Ariz. for awhile. Show seemed much smaller than usual, probably because of the none show of most of the "Mile High Engine club" from Prescott Ariz. Still in all it was a pretty good show with a bueatiful AC WD45 that was worth the trip to see for me.Show stopper I think was a Big Oliver Super 99 with Detroit power on the Sled .Made a lot of noise. No wonder operators of those Machines are hard of hearing. Then an International 660 D pulled and pulled the same distance and it was so quiet you had no problem hearing the person who was talking to you.So there you go. Well enough from Arizona for now. Get well quick. John

I feel for you, I really do. I've found there's some out there that go out of their way to help out, and then their are the .....

Its been a huge awakening for me to see how people treat you when you are laid up. Today is 4 weeks to the day since I got my leg in a silage wrapper (17 pins in my right knee and lower leg). I'm on a walker and 20 hrs a day bedrest. Driving me (and spouse, kid, parents, cats, etc) NUTS. Even at the Drs office a dozen people almost slammed or tripped over my leg. Not like I can bend it, if I would, I could, lol. You'd think at an orthopedic surgeons office people would think about that stuff.

Keep us posted on whats happening. Maybe we can comiserate through rehab together.

Sorry to hear about your foot! I know what you mean about not moving fast and getting run over! The biggest problem I run into are kids that parents let run free. My wife and I were in a store a while back. I got "run over" by a 6-7 year old kid, who came running up from behind and nearly knocked me to the ground by running into my cane. He bounced a couple times and lay on the floor crying until his non-English speaking mother picked him up.
You'll get used to it! How long you gonna be laid up?
