I've seen some pretty crazy things sell for pretty crazy prices on ebay, but this is amazing. Who pays these prices?

Item number 280044163233 if my link doesn't work.

I wonder if that model is the famous ERTL "gas diesel" 3010/3020? They actualy had one with the carburetor on one side and diesel equipment on the other.

No tires and the fenders are on backwards !!! Likely a poor restoration job.

The complete set WITH the box. Unplayed with.

Three rules to value with collectables on ebay.

CONDITION, CONDITION, CONDITION.

BTDT, seller for 4 years.

"complete set"

Nope. Read the description. It's missing the tires and muffler for the tractor.

Having the box about doubles the price of the toys. I have all the componets, but no box. Toys are easier to store than real tractors/implements, and the up-keep/repairs are a lot less. If you have limited money/storage and want a piece of your past farming history (remember the number of actual farmers is shrinking every year), sales literature or toys are an easier way to participate. Fortunately, I have been able to do all three. Old toy values have continued to increase, so it might not be such an bad investment. I bought 2-3 of each Ertl precision classic, which probably amounted to around 15-20K. A couple months ago, an avid toy collector told me they were worth more than 100K. I don't believe that number, but 50K might not be unreasonable.

Sure they're easier to store and all but 1500 bucks on what?!? When I buy a REAL "B" for 1500 bucks, I have something with which I can plow my garden, run the hay elevator, pull hay loads, cultivate two rows of corn, and drive around the farm. When this guy gets his incomplete set home, he can sit it on the shelf and gaze wistfully at it, wishing he had the 3020 rears and muffler.

Oh well, it takes all kinds to make the world spin 'round.

Most want-a-be farmers don't own enough ground to turn a B and plow around. It is not the life style that few if any on this board want to embrace, but it is more normal than what we are doing. If you have a garden to plow, and fields to make hay or cultivate in any of the more populated regions, than you are probably envied by others more than you realize. Remember that the few farm families still in business generally have at least two children, many have more, and only one usually farms. This leaves a lot of potential buyers for farm memorabilia such as toys, sales literature, etc. Personally, if I had a great childhood growing up on a farm which used a 3020 and other JD equipment, and was now stuck full time in a Chicago condo with a decent job, $1500 would be a small price to pay for the good old memories. I might even invest in a large sand box to play along with any future grandchildren.

Heavens, when I try to buy a toy, an antique,an old tractor or 40 acres of land, I am almost always outbid by a farmer. I spent my life working a normal white collar job and I can't compete with 2nd 3rd generation farmers when it comes to buying cool stuff. At our church every Sunday, the newest, fanciest trucks, SUV's are being driven by the farmers not the good, honest hard working blue collar guys who build things and fix things. Sorry if I burst your bubble.

Wow, never heard that before...

I always thought the best way to end up with a small fortune is to take a large fortune farming.

My wife says I can't start farming until my current job pays me enough to afford such an expensive habit.

Perhaps these guys have day jobs, or an endless pit of debt...

The only Mercedes I saw at the local new tractor dealer belonged to the owner....

And it was several years old...

"Who pays these prices?"
Probably not a farmer, unless it's a "corporate CEO" farmer.

Where's the stinkin tires?
