A buddy of mine has a 79' F-250, with a 400 motor and auto tranny, full time four wheel drive.. well he got the bright idea of making it run on LP.. he said before he put it on LP that he was getting 14 MPG.. on a 400??? and now he is saying that on LP he gained 40!! HP and around 8-10 MPG!!!! I think he is full of more then hot air.. what ya' think? I thought you got LESS HP with LP? right? and what about the milage? I don't think he could have been getting 14 before, and no way is he getting 20+ now.. what ya' think? thanks..

Now , if you looked at cost per mile, that conversion to LPG is a great idea. Not so sure about the extra horses.

I have a hunch he could get strung up by the tax nazi's for not paying highway tax that we pay at the pump. If he got caught.

Probably the only thing I would believe with certainty is that his crankcase oil is a lot cleaner now.

I have a 74 Chev pickup on LP. Less hp and less MPG but an engine that is cleaner than a whistle. It will run for ever and LP is cheaper.

Its possible it had a junk carb on it. I have seen gains in excess of this when an older carb was scrapped in favor of a new edelbrock or carter afb. My father threw a newer holley over the fence into a ditch in anger. It sets there still. He won't let anyone touch it. Aaron

Naw,

He's just feeling good that the job is over.

He lost 10% on the power and the fuel economy dropped also. BTDT.

I think your buddy has been inhaling that LP, or at least sniffing the fumes from the exhaust.

Propane used to be more popular especially in school busses before diesel. Propane burns cleaner but you have to make sure you have stellite valves. HP drops and so does mileage. The savings come only in initial cost. The 400 was a pig on gas and was dropped. The 460 had a lot more power and twice the mileage. My neighbor had a brand new 3/4 ton supercab 4 x 4 and only got 8 mpg on a good day. His brother had a 460 in a one ton pick up and got 15 mpg. Both trucks were new 79's. Dave
