I have an International Harvester 444 gas tractor with only 750 hours use. Can a multi-grade oil be substituted for the single grade oil which is specified in the owners manual? If so, what grade of oil should be used?

I have an IH2444 same thing just industrial version. I use 15/40 Dello 400 in mine, for 5 years now, works good.
I was not to wild about the recommendation in the manual to thin 30W with kerosene for winter...

A good modern oil, but not the latest. Look for something with API-SG,SH, SJ ratings. SM has less additive needed for flat cam followers. 10W-30 is good stuff, generally. 15W-40 have a good supply of the slip additive even in API-SM, but can be a bit thick for cold weather starts. The other additives of the modern oils will prevent bearing corrosion and so lengthen the life of the engine significantly.

Not familiar with that model, but most IH equipment says you can substitute 15-40 multiweight for single grade #30. In most cases they want you to change the multiweight at 1/2-2/3 the hours of single weight #30. In cold temps you can use a 10-30 or 10-40 as long as it has a C (compression ignition, diesel rateing) in the API logo.
