Hello friends, been reading this site awhile just never had occasion to post til now. There was some talk earlier about small time tobacco farmers (good luck tmay!) and I was just wondering how things are done in other areas. Around here all the the flue cured leaf is pretty much contract. No more auctions. Is there still a market for small growers? Is burley sold differently? Just curious. I think a fella down below asked the same question as me it just got buried. I learn alot here, thanks to all!!-JR

Thanks Jim and Mike, I was just curious what others were doing. Like you said Jim, there really aren"t any small time flue cured growers in my area anymore(SC), kinda sad since tobacco was a way of life around here for so long, but I guess the world does change. Mike, I hope those small growers are able keep it up. Have a good day!!

Flue cured is sold by contract also. The one buyer that may have had auctions is only going to have one at the end of the season. If you are not near a tobacco producing region, you may have to haul it a long distance to a buyer. Higher fuel and labor costs over the last few years have made flue cured less profitable than burley. One has to grow more to produce the same income as compared to a few years ago. Many growers are using their buyout money to supplement their tobacco farming costs. Burley would work better than flue cured for a small producer. These are some of the reasons that I have not grown any for the last 2 years. I miss it, but if is not profitable, I am not going to use my buyout money to subsidize it. This is what the buying companys want farmers to do.

I live in Ky in burley country. There is still a market. It also is now all contract. They even contract with the little guys. Some are concerned for how long. In my area it is mainly Phillip- Morris. We have people who raise as little as a couple of acres and some who have a hundred.
