Got a Ford 2000 3 cyl. gas tractor. It quit on me a few months ago. Had the carb rebuilt, new selinoid, plugs, wires, coil, condensor, points, rotor, rotor cap. Drained gas and checked filter. Went to fire it up, still won't start. Here's my problem now. I couldn't get the sediment bowl to fill with gas, so I turned the engine over several time in an attempt to force the bowl to fill up. I then tried to start it several times, but it was a no-go. I then turned the key off, but the engine continued to turn over. It got fast and then real slow until it died. I think maybe I fried something. The red light in the dash doesn't come on at all when you turn the key (not to start it). Think I need to call somebody that know what their doing. Thanks all. Brian

Take the spark plugs out and squirt a little gas in each cylinder and hurry put the plugs back in just finger tight if you have to and then try to start it, if it pops then you know it is not getting gas, if it does nothing then it's probably electrical.

The carb was sent out for rebuild. Not only do they replace parts but it get a bath in some kind of acid. Looked like new when it came back. So it's not gummed up or anything. \
Shutoff was unscrewed from gas tank. Ran some gas through there to flush tank. Filter at that location was clean. If sediment bowl is removed, the gas runs out fine.
Firing order is 1 2 3. Rotor turns counterclockwise. Number one went to the plug. toward the front of tractor and so on.
Well if I don't have any luck this weekend, tractor place will pick it up Monday morning. It's gonna cost, but I need the tractor badly as it has a loader. Plus I don't handle stress very well. Tom by the way, I'm located in upstate new york. Thank to everyone for trying to help.

Brian,
Don't give up. Those 3 cyl. Fords are terriffic tractors!
There are 3 filters on them. One is a screen in the fuel shut off valve on the tank.
Second is a filter in the line looks like a small sediment bowl but has a filter inside.
Third is a screen in the brass connector where the fuel line enters the carb.
The OEM Holley carb wasn't one of Ford's better ideas. Most guys on the Ford board agree that it's best to just bite the bullet and buy the replacement Zenith. (available from this site)

Well, I charged the battery. Red dash light doesn't stay on when key is off, so that is a good thing. So I was going to try to start it one more time. I turn on the gas and now gas is leaking from up by the fan/pulley area. Wasn't leaking yesterday, so I don't know why this developed. That was the final straw. Tractor place is picking it up Monday morning. At this point, I don't care what it cost. Just fix everything and make it run and bring it back. Should of done this in the first place. I'm embarassed to say how many hours I've been screwing around with this. Thanks everyone for trying to help though. Brian

I would keep the fire extinguisher near while troubleshooting this one.Could you have a gravity feed blockage in the fuel still, maybe? And also have run down the battery. If there is no fuel in float bowl the needle should be open and fallen down with the float.Gas sitting awhile can make things get sticky in the float bowl.See if the float and float needle is hung up from green gas residue. If by sediment bowl you mean at the petcock then the blockage is right before that point.Just because someone put a rebuild kit in the carb does not mean they checked the float action on the float pin that it hangs off.Thats where the gumminess makes it not smooth and hang up.I had to ream them with alot of q-tips to unglue them at times.Since Im not familar with your carb I hope this is may apply.

I'd get that start solenoid checked out too. Low batterie voltage can cause high current and make the relay contacts stick.

Some have suggested that your tractor has a fuel pump. I do not know. But so long as the carburetor bowl is full of fuel, the air in the sediment bowl may well remain there. As soon as the needle valve in the carburetor opens the air in the sediment bowl will vanish almost instantly. Your needle valve might be stuck closed. But if it is closed because the carburetor is full, that is normal. If the rest of the fuel system is operating normally, the air in the sediment bowl will clear itself just fine.

You need to leave the sediment bowl loose until it fills so it can push the air out . Tighten after gas starts running out .

Don't know about the electrical but if the sediment bowl off the gas tank has no fuel, you could crank for as long as you wanted and it wont start. Sounds like you've got dirt or rust or something blocking the fuel line coming out of the tank. Did you make sure the gas is turned on? Maybe the shut off is plugged? Just some suggestions. Dave

Brian your fuel pump is stoped up there is a small bolt on top of the pump that holds a round cover on remove that and clean out the filter in the pump. as for the engine continued to turn over you probly over heated your starter solnoid and it stuck.

I hope you removed the battery cable and have recharged the battery. If you do not do this your battery may be brown bread shortly.

sediment bowl not filling up only means that the gas doesnt have any place to go {may be stuck shut needle valve],or a vacum in the tankfrom a non venting cap, now if there isnt any gas in the carb it fer sure wont start

Brian,

I'm sorry to hear of your frustrating circumstance. I think you're right about getting some on-site help at this time. Watch closely, and ask questions. It's painful now, but it should be a real learning experience for you as it gets worked out.

BTW, where are you located?

bring number 1 cylinder up to the timing mark and see if the rotor is ready to fire on number 1 plug wirepost on cap. check plug wires for correct firing order, had folks tune up and have wrong firing order on wires after tune up and swore several times they were right ,when i got there they were wrong..

First thing is if you turned the key off and it still turned over it probably run the battery dead. We have a 4020 gas JD that will do that.

If you get that figured out and it still doesn't start I would be interested in what you finally have to do to get it running. I worked on one last year and it was getting spark to the plug, fuel to the carb and even past the carb but still wouldn't fire. Only thing I can think of is that it jumped time somehow but the owner was going to carry it to a mechanic and I haven't heard from them as to what fixed it.
