I have farmed and worked in the woods of northern minnesota for the past 25 years. I
believe the best way to go is to look around
for an old but useable cable skidder. This is
what I did. Several people have been killed
out in the woods by there farm tractors.
These tractors have flipped over backwards,
rolled to one side or the other if your winching
a little to the side. Or they bumped into a
tree and the top half came down and flattened
them right to the tractor.

PLEASE BE CAREFULL IN MAKING THIS WINCH DICISSION. JIM WJ

Electric winches won't last long under constant use are good to pull a truck out of ditch , but will burn up if used to log with I know more than one person that has found this out the hard way . I have one now that I had to replace Motor in 2 HP 12 Volt electric motor for Warn is about $200 plus time wasted replacing it . Go with a PTO or HYD winch .

The farmi winches tell you a front end loader MUST be mounted on the tractor.

Unimog covered it well. The none forestry ones that I have seen were all to slow and did not have the safety things built in. Just find a used one they seem to last for ever.

I have a Fransgard V4000 right now and I like it.
It is well built and safe and simple to use. The
good thing about a proper factory model is it has
safe controls, safety guards and the anchoring
plow/skid plate. It holds the tractor when pulls
are heavy. An ordinary winch does not have these
futures so you would have to build them as well.
Size depends on the tractor and size of load. My
winch has a 8000-9000 lb pull which meets my need.
Cost for a new one of this size and brand would be
in the $3500 to 4500 range. If you can find a used
one, as I did, you are looking at $1500-2500. Also
there are more manufacturers building cheaper ones
from India, China, etc. Farmi is probably the best
known brand and is an excellent winch as well.
