I'm going to be doing 40-45 acres of hay next year and got to thinking about the whole faming thing. I don't claim to be a farmer, In fact at forty acres I think it might still be a hobby. I was wondering what some of you who farm as your main income or have to farm to supplement your income out of neccessity consider a farmer. I am thinking of using part of the money I make to save for the kid's college. Part will be for restoring farm equipment and of course a little for beer money. I'm going to be doing the hay for some neighbors that have the land but don't have the time or flexability to bale. I remember reading somewhere in '91 that the three most respected occupations were firefighter, paramedic and farmer. I don't remember which was one, two or three, but I feel honored to have a part in all three albeit small when it comes to farming.

a farmer is not judge by the size of his field but how good he is with it.

My dad always said that a farmer was a man "outstanding" in his field.

Yeah, that could ruin your day in a hurry. Seems I recall being told that happened to a relative of mine - a great, great, great uncle maybe.

Kind of silly now, but I can remember crouching down a little lower on an open station tractor each time lightning would flash after getting caught in the field trying to finish. Yeah, like that's gonna help...

Mornin' John,

Unless you have entered into a rental agreement with these landowners and if you are taking a cash payment for your services, you are doing what is called "Custom farming".

If, on the other hand, you are taking a portion of the crop as your payment or pay a fee for the use of the land and you are actually tending that crop, you are "Share-cropping" or "Renting".

If you don't take any monies in or claim any expenses going out, you are "Hobby farming".

Sure sounds to me like you are now in the farming business. :>)

I was an "out go" farmer, as there was always more out go than income. The money earned went to tuition in the "Colledge of hard Knocks". lol

If you actually think you'll make money, you're not a farmer. LOL

Keep track of all your farming type expenses and incomes. Work through IRS schedule F (including depreciation) and if you make money occasionally the IRS says its a farm. If you always loose money, its a hobby and not deductible. You may have to shuffle expenses and sales from year to year to show a profit occasionally.

Join Farm Bureau, that's another mark. And the classified in their newpaper is a good place to sell hay without advertising expense, past the membership.

And when selling hay, take only cash. Bad checks take away too much profit.

If you "bury" lots of money in the soil every spring with hopes of getting it all,and more, back in the fall, you must be a FARMER. as apposed to "GAMBLERS" who do it inside out of the weather.Result is usually the same. At least Farmers feed the world, GAMBLERS only make the Native Americans lazier.
