I'm so pumped! It turns out that I get a Farmall Super M from my in-laws for the price it takes to go get it (even though I offered them a fair price). Because of unfortunate circumstances it needs to get off their property ASAP. I went to trailer it home and it would not start. No cranking at all. Voltage (12v) is good at the battery and across the starter switch. When the switch is closed I read about 8 volts at the starter but there is nothing happening mechanically. The tractor ran and was parked in the spot it is now about a month ago. I'm pretty sure the starters bad but the lights don't work either and they worked the last time it was driven, so it may be something more complex? All of the wiring is really bad and needs to get replaced eventually but I need to get it running NOW. I thought "no problem I'll replace the starter" until I unbolted it and found that there is not enough rear clearance to remove it. Please help a rural transplant like me figure out if my starters really bad and how to pull it out, and or any solutions to my electrical issues...

I should have mentioned that I got a new battery and wired it in after I could not get intial start with the existing one. I also replaced the wires from the battery (+) to the starter switch, and starter switch to the starter (I cleaned up the (-) cable and the ground also). Another problem is the tractor is backed against the shed and has an oversized bucket on it which has the pins pulled from the hydro cylinders. The bucket is pointed down and grounded on the working edge of the bucket so it's not going to be easy to raise it up and pin it. And that's assuming that once I get it up, it just wont relax to the ground due to leaky cylinders. This makes me think that I got some work ahead of me if I'm going to attempt a push or pull start. I'm mechanically inclined but am really ignorant about tractors though (I know the green one's are JD's and I had a red pedal tractor when I was a kid). I don't want to end up hurting myself or wrecking something either! I'm hopeful that it's the easy fix for the starter, and if not I can get it off. I'll also bring along some thicker guage cables to help pass more current as well. Thanks for all your suggestions... I wanna be in the parade! Oh yeah... I don't think this tractor has a hand crank feature does it?

First of all make sure it will fit your trailer width.....most trailers are not wide enough for the M .....

Why not pull it to get started for loading.....ride the brakes and have someone hand push it off the trailer at home..... ...Don

If you have 8 volts at the starter it is insufficient, and the battery (though looking good is not fully charged, or is weak. a strong battery will show 10.5 volts while cranking. Jump start it with a hot battery it will go. (if jumping, connect to the frame near the starter, and to the battery side of the starter switch, and use neg ground If it is a common car alternator) JimN

I appreciate the help! It's too bad I didn't have one of you with me last night when I was trying to get my new toy running. You probably wouldn't have wanted to be there though (North Central Minnesota 20 degrees with 15 mph wind). I wish I had tryed your suggestions last night but I had it in my head the starter was shot, the fingers, toes, and lower unit were getting darn cold, and we had to get going back home (about 60 miles away). Let's all pray I get my deer early tomorrow morning so I can run back up North and get my TRAKTOR!

If you need to move the tractor, and need it ASAP, and have a 2nd person to help you, get yourself a 20 foot jumper cable as I call it. (20 foot log chain) a pull it to start it. That does not solve your starter problems. If it has a battery igntion, you can also make sure the battery is charged, get a jumper wire, go from the battery to the pos. side of coil to get fire to points, then pull it to start it, then to kill it, all you need to do it to pull the wire off the coil. This is just another way to get it running if you need it to move now.

Could be several things from poor bat. conn. to stuck engine. brother parked 450 in shed last week, wouldnt say a word next day. Still dont know what it was but starter locked against flywheel. loosened starter and backed out 1/2 in tapped ign and starter spun, reinstalled and hav no problem since? Hope yours is as easy. Dont remember if SM has solinoid or not. that could poss. be prob.

The starter might havwe been "locked", common on IH's

Loosen the three starter bolts and just wiggle the starter. Then put it back on and try to start it.

This usually works.

They can be tricky, but they will come out. You have to take the two bolts out of course, and they can be close sometimes, then pull the cable off, then wiggle the starter up and down and pull it towards the rear of the tractor and wiggle some more as you pull it out. there is just one place where it clears the ring gear and you can pull it out towards where you are standing and it WILL come out. Good luck. Harley

Starter might be stuck, happens a lot on starters on IH letter series when drive & fly wheel gear gets wore some. Loosen the starter, wiggle on it w/pry bar, tighten & try it again. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

jal's right. Take the bolts loose, pull the starter back a little, then bolt it back in and try it. If this don't work, take it loose again, and pull it back, make sure it is grounded good on the bell housing, and hit the starter button to see if it works. If not, then you'll have to remove it. First though, take the two battery cables loose and clean them and the posts good. Tractor electricity can be our friend. On the other hand it can drive you right straight up through the wall. Again, good luck, Harley
