I've been comparing prices between IH 88 series and whites and whites go considerable cheaper I wanted to know why. I was comparing 5088 and 2-135. Are 2-135 decent outfits?

Whites are great. I have one with 8000 hrs on and it hasnt been touched. Also have a couple others with 5000+ hrs and no major break downs. You cant beat a white for the price. We overhauled our 2-135 a few years back- it wasnt expensive enough to even look at a deere or IH. It still had almost 5000hrs on it-all mouldboard plowing too.

the neighbor has two whites, one is a 2-85, and the other is a 2-105 field boss. both are nice tractors, and i like to operate them my self, and one day i hope to own one of my own, even though i am partial to JD New Generation tractors.

another thing, i like the over direct and under shifting that the white trans has. it is like a three speed power shift with a split 6 speed trans.

You must consider apples to apples. If the 5088 is in pristine condition and the 2-135 is a wore out piece of junk then yes - the 2-135 is gonna be a lot cheaper. If the 2-135 is in good condition and of the same vintage of the 5088 then it should be comparable in price. White made the 2-135 from 1976 to 1987. It was a long run and they were good tractors. New and used parts are obtainable but unless you are a mechanic I'd make sure some dealer support wasn't too far away. The series three came out in 1982 and were equipped with a improved cab. I wonder about future dealer/parts support for other makes from that era also since IH has changed hands twice, Massey and Allis to AGCO, etc. There was at one time in the 70's 11 dealerships in my county for various makes. Now we are down to two full fledged dealers and one satelitte store. Lawn mowers and utility tractors make up the majority of their sales.

If your gonna get a 2-135 get a series 3, the cab is much better. As for the rearend they are indestructable.....very heavy, and hyd"s are excellent for that age tractor. These things are heavy and were designed to work. The motor will like fuel and has great lugging ability, however, in all honesty that is the weak point. But you can always drop in a 8.3 Cummins, then you got the perfect tractor!!

the white tractors are good machines and will take a beating. a friend has a 135 that he pulls a 13 shank chisel plow with but i think the pump is turned up to be able to pull that much. the reason that the whites go cheaper is must people want either deere or international around me not a thing wrong with that whites.

I dont know to much about a white cause I,m a IH man but the 50 series tractors are alittle expensive to fix...trans and rearend parts are high priced...didnt make them to long..I know they used to jump into nutural also if the trans controller went bad...just my 2 cents

I have a White 2-105, it is in the same series as the 135 and I think they use the same Perkins engine. They are great tractors, simple to work on and definitely a cheaper to buy and work on tractor than the Deeres and IHs of that era. I highly recommend them. That Perkins engine is unbeatable.

The 88 series tractors have a pressure lubricated transmission, and rearend. Also consider the IH 400 series engine, compared to the Herc. engines which are very expensive to overhaul.

nothing wrong with a White if you have a good local dealer, agco has been good for parts availabilty. The 478 hercules is a decent motor though spendy to rebuild and white carried on the tradition of very durable trans. and diffs unlike IH 86 series and older! The 135 is a heavy tractor and is noted for pulling ability, the over/under is a nice setup for gear selection. The 5088 would be fine also and if it comes to dealerships or lack of i would lean to the IH.

The 5088 is a great tractor. My uncle bought a new one several years ago, and it has been great. Most of the time you can"t go wrong with IH. Remember "most of the time." Over the years he has bought new a 460, 806, 986, 4840 JD, and that 5088 plust many others, but in my opinion that 5088 is the best. You can"t go wrong with that 414 series motor.

Is this going to be like the "blue tractor" topic a couple of pages back?

When something is unusually cheaper than something else there is usually a reason. No exception here, most of the White's in that series I've seen are pretty Mickey Mouse in design, lots of small nickel and dime repairs and no much parts support left for them.
